Welcome New and Returning Staff
We extend a warm welcome (or welcome back) to our new teachers for the 2018-19 school year, left to right: Colin Madigan, Jaclyn Stevens and Amy Lauer.
Colin Madigan
is a familiar face, having served as a long-term math substitute at Bishop Watterson during the 2017-18 school year. He will be teaching Algebra I and Geometry this year. Mr. Madigan graduated from Ohio University in 2017 with a degree in Math Education.
Jaclyn Stevens
joins the faculty as our new Latin teacher. She comes to us from Halls High School in Knoxville, Tenn. where she taught all levels of Latin as well as Classical Mythology and Etymology. She holds a B.A. in the Classics from Denison University (2012) and a Master’s in the Classics from the University of Georgia (2014).
Amy Lauer,
who taught English at BWHS from 2005-2008, will be teaching English 10, American Literature and Drama. Prior to her first stint at Bishop Watterson, Mrs. Lauer was an Editorial Assistant and Copy Editor for Columbus Business First and since 2015 she has served as a substitute teacher and instructional aide for Bexley City Schools. Mrs. Lauer holds a B.S. in Journalism from Ohio University (1999) and a Master’s in Education from the University of Akron (2004).

Courtesy Requested while Driving and Picking Up
“A good neighbor is a very desireable thing.”
--Thomas Jefferson
As you may have noticed, Bishop Watterson is in a neighborhood and that means we have neighbors. Please help us set a tone of common sense and courtesy.
Drivers:
Watch your speed. Parents and students, please put your phone away or on airplane mode before getting behind the wheel.
Picking Up Students After School:
Due to bus congestion, we ask parents to arrive after 3:30 p.m. Do not park or stop on the east side of Foster, in front of the neighbors’ homes
.
Cars who stop on this side, regardless of whether they are blocking a driveway or not, will most definitely be in the way for north-bound drivers on Foster.
If you are picking your child up after an activity and are waiting in line at the south entrance, please pull forward against the curb or park in the lot.
In addition, the City of Columbus has made Cooke Road in front of the BWHS main entrance a no-stopping zone.

Vaping a Growing Concern for Teens
We are concerned about the growing use of vaping devices among teenagers and encourage parents to be aware of the health risks as well as our policy that students found vaping at school will receive a minimum three-day suspension.
This
recent article
indicates that the F.D.A. is investigating the company that makes Juul devices to determine whether they intentionally marketed to youth.
In addition, the country of Israel has now outlawed the import and sale of e-cigarettes made by Juul Labs.

Wednesday News Emails
Occasionally we get calls from parents who didn’t receive Watterson Wednesday News. If you suddenly do not receive our weekly email, start by checking all of the folders in your email and move our email to your inbox. This usually solves the problem. Because we use a bulk email service and include links, internet service providers sometimes filter the emails.
Also keep in mind that we post Wednesday News on our website under About and Stay Informed.

All Welcome at the Blue Mass
St. Timothy Church and St. Timothy Knights of Columbus Council 14345 will host The Blue Mass on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. The Blue Mass is an opportunity to honor and pray for all active, retired and deceased police, firefighters, and emergency medical services workers. In addition, it is an occasion to remember the 2,973 who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The Celebrant and Homilist for The Blue Mass will be The Most Reverend Frederick F. Campbell, Bishop of Columbus. Let us all join together to honor our police, firefighters, and emergency medical services, to ask for God’s blessing, to keep them safe, and to guide them in their duties.
History of the Blue Mass
The Blue Mass dates back to 1934 in Washington, D.C. Rev. Thomas Dade from the Archdiocese of Baltimore (Maryland) initiated the Catholic Police and Firemen's Society while stationed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. About 1,100 police and firemen dressed in blue uniforms marched into St. Patrick's Catholic Church for the celebration of the First Blue Mass on September 29th, 1934. The Blue Mass has been a common tradition in the Northeast United States, but it has more recently been extended throughout the country particularly in the wake of September 11, 2001.
