2025 Msgr. Spiers Awards

Four students have been honored with the Monsignor Spiers Service Award for the 2024-25 school year, announced today as a highlight of Catholic Schools Week.

Congratulations to Marissa Fogt, Angie Hanson, Sophia Reing-Hurley and Tad White!

The Monsignor Spiers Service Awards are named after Monsignor Edward Spiers, the founding principal when Bishop Watterson opened its doors in 1954. Monsignor Spiers served as principal at Bishop Watterson from 1953-1971. A tradition that goes back to 1996, these awards are presented by Student Council to honor students who have performed outstanding service in both the school and the community. The Msgr. Spiers Awards honor individuals who have upheld his commitment to the Christian values of service and education.

Parents of Juniors:

Just a reminder that the 2nd meningococcal vaccine is due after your child’s 16th birthday and BEFORE the start of senior year. If your student has an upcoming doctor’s appointment, please make sure to have this vaccine administered. If your child has received the meningitis B vaccine this does not satisfy Ohio school requirements; a meningococcal ACWY vaccine is required. Questions? Time to Submit EdChoice Applications

It is now time to renew or apply for your Ohio EdChoice Scholarship for the 2025-2026 school year.

FAQs

Are families required to participate in this state scholarship program?

No.

We currently have EdChoice at our feeder school. Are we a renewal?

Yes, unless your assigned public high school now makes you eligible for EdChoice Traditional. In that case you complete a new application.

Do I complete one application for my family or one application per child?

You must complete one application for each child for whom you are applying for the scholarship.

Will I have to pay tuition?

Yes, there will be a balance on all family accounts that need to be paid after the EdChoice Scholarship except for those families who the state approves for low income. The scholarship does not cover the full tuition and fees.

Where do I send my application materials?

Email to edchoice@bwhs.org. Paper copies mailed or dropped off to school will not be processed due to the volume of applications that need to be submitted by our team. Note that your submitted utility bill must be dated within 90 days and include BOTH the mailing and service addresses.

If you are applying for low income status for the Traditional EdChoice Scholarship, you must also have your income verified. To complete the Income Verification process with the state of Ohio, parents must submit the form online using the secure Income Verification system, or complete and mail the paper form to the address provided. Emailing documents is not permitted. Instructions can be found here.

If my child receives a Jon Peterson scholarship, can we also receive an EdChoice scholarship?

State law permits a family to receive only one state scholarship, either EdChoice or Jon Peterson.

Are there any requirements in addition to the application documentation?

A student may not be absent more than 20 days in the preceding school year.

Senior Research Paper Due Tuesday, February 18

The senior research paper is due on Tuesday, February 18. A hard copy of the paper must be turned in at the beginning of the student’s English class period. No late papers are accepted for any reason. Failure to turn in the paper along with all preliminary work at that time will result in required attendance at a summer session during which the student will write a different research paper in order to receive a diploma. The cost for the summer session is $300.
