Six Reminders for Hiring (Drug-Free) Summer Help

With summer right around the corner, many employers are getting ready to hire additional employees to get through their upcoming busy season. Yet, while summer may be the time to get extra help, it’s not the time to take a vacation from running an effective drug-free workplace program.

As you prepare to bring on your seasonal workers, here are six items to think through regarding your drug-free workplace policy and program.

Changes to reimbursement rates
The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation has updated the maximum reimbursement rates for their Substance Use Recovery and Workplace Safety Program (SURWSP).

Remember ... SURWSP pays you back for what you spend on your drug-free workplace program.

Check out our infographic for the new reimbursement rates and to see how SURWSP complements the Drug-Free Safety Program.

Let's talk mental health
May is Mental Health Month. With one out of five adults in the U.S. experiencing a mental health problem at any given moment, there's a good chance one of your employees is going through something that is impacting their emotional, psychological or social well-being.

Check out the resources on Mental Health America's site for information about mental health. And make sure to share this information with your employees. You never know who may need the information.
Brief Marijuana Update
Have you been keeping tabs on what's happening with marijuana in Ohio? If not, here is a quick update:

Two Ohio Democratic state legislators introduced a bill to legalize adult-use marijuana in the state. Their bill mirrors the initiative promoted by the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol (CTRMLA) initiative.

If the legislators' bill does not pass, CTRMLA's next step would be to start collecting signatures to put the issue on the ballot. However, that step is in question because of questions around the timing of when the initial signatures were submitted. The Coalition has filed a lawsuit to get clarification on this issue.
