Poems of Appalachia and Beyond
Thursday, April 4, 7:00 p.m.
Celebrate National Poetry Month with Nicole A. Yurcaba, Instructor of English at Bridgewater College, as she leads a poetic exploration of Appalachian female identity, Appalachian ethos, Appalachian culture and other issues currently relevant to Appalachian society. Poems which address feminism, identity and other issues from Yurcaba’s various publications will also be included. Yurcaba is the author of numerous books, including Backwoods and Back Words, a collection of poetry, shorts stories and photography focusing on West Virginia.

Catherine Backus is an award-winning singer-songwriter who often draws comparisons to Gillian Welch, Lori McKenna and Kathleen Edwards. Originally from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, she currently resides in Roanoke where she is a member of the Skipperdees, plays bluegrass with old dudes, and performs her original folk and Americana songs. Light lunch provided.

Come to Seven Arrows Brewery for an evening of craft beer and trivia fun hosted by the Valley Libraries. Teams can consist of up to six adults. Prizes will be rewarded for first and second place winners. Ages 21 and up. The trivia is free—beer and snacks are on you.

Living Soil Film and Discussion

Join us for a film and discussion to celebrate NACD National Stewardship Week 2019. Living Soil tells the story of farmers, scientists, and policymakers working to incorporate agricultural practices to benefit soil health for years to come. This documentary was directed by Chelsea Myers of Tiny Attic Productions and produced by the Soil Health Institute through generous support of The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. Co-sponsored by Headwaters Soil and Water Conservation District.

Great Decisions Discussion Group

Read a short article in the Great Decisions Briefing Book (available in the library), then meet to discuss.
