Empathy: A Movement Inward, A Movement Outward

Led by Chris Clark, Director of Youth at Westminster Presbyterian Church, West Chester, Pa.

What does it take to come together as humans? What does it take to come together as the Body of Christ? As poet and theologian Pádraig Ó Tauma puts it “At the end of the day… these questions will remain. Who are we to be with one another? And how are we to be with one another?”

As we gather for worship we will engage such questions, reflecting on our inner lives, how we move outward to encounter one another, and how following Christ invites us on the journey of greater empathy and compassion. It is a journey on which we bring our full selves and stories, that we might move toward healing, wholeness and our deeper shared humanity.

Beyond Welcome: Further thoughts on
disability in congregational life

Facilitated by Caroline Cupp, Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church, West Chester

Disability is something that impacts every congregation, and yet many of us lack the language to talk about the gifts and challenges of physical and cognitive diversity in our churches. The desire to be welcoming and inclusive can hit up against practical considerations of inaccessibility and program design. And yet, we trust that people with disabilities are rightly included in every part of the church’s life.

We also know that people with disabilities and their families attend church at a much lower rate than the general population because congregations don’t always know how to engage them. During our May presbytery gathering, we’ll hear from experts in disability theology, Christian education, and those with lived experience having or loving someone with a physical or intellectual impairment.

We’ll empower congregations to look beyond segregated programming, and talk about strategies for serving alongside people with disabilities. The program will be in a video format available to all congregations in the presbytery to spark further conversation with your sessions and leadership.
Lunch & Books!
A New Group for Pastors

Calling all Mid-Career and Beyond Pastors! We’re excited to share the news that a new group for convivial lunch and book discussion will be beginning in March.

This group will meet monthly in a brewpub-type place for friendship over lunch and book discussion led by Byron Borger, owner of the fabulous Hearts and Minds Bookstore.

The first gathering will actually be at the bookstore to pick out books for the months ahead. The group will also come up with the name for the group.

The Engaging Our Mission Committee has given a grant for this new initiative that will pay for the first book and lunch for the first year for participants.

While pastors who are newer in ministry have had the New Lead Pastor Cohort for a number of years, we’re glad to have an opportunity for pastors further along in ministry.

Please register your interest in this group by clicking this link. This will sign you up as interested. We’ll then be in touch to find dates that work for everyone.
