August 16, 2023

Dear Providence,

I hope you are feeling well rested and rejuvenated as the summer comes to a close. FCPS returns to school this coming Monday, August 21, and I want to wish all of our students an enriching and fantastic school year ahead. Below you will find a few opportunities to ensure our students are fully prepared and equipped for another successful year.

After a wonderful summer filled with music and dance, the curtain draws near on the Providence Presents Concert Series. Join us this Saturday, August 19th, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm for the grand finale for this summer of our "Mosiac Live" featuring a performance by Ocho de Bastos.

Mark your calendars for Nottoway Nights, this Thursday 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm, featuring Texas Chainsaw Horns, and our final Nottoway Nights, Thursday, August 24th, from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm, highlighted by the electrifying sounds of Fast Eddies & the Slowpokes. Come out and end the summer right!

With gratitude,

CEDV Leadership Positions

The Fairfax County Council to End Domestic Violence (CEDV) is seeking volunteers for three leadership positions:

  • Chairperson,
  • Vice Chairperson,
  • Community Leader and Organizer

(each to serve a three-year term.) The mission of the CEDV is to unite senior-level public officials and community leaders; to advise the Board of Supervisors on a range of domestic violence policy, legislative, and program issues; and to guide the development of a coordinated and collaborative community response to domestic violence in Fairfax County.

Fairfax County Co-Responder Program

The Fairfax County Co-Responder Program is a partnership between the Fairfax County Police Department and the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB). It pairs a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trained police officer with a CSB Crisis Intervention Specialist to respond to public safety calls that are related to behavioral health issues.

As of May 2023, we have seen the following positive outcomes due to the implementation of our co-responder team model:

  • Over 1100 responses.
  • Over 50% of calls were resolved in the field with no further action needed.
  • Close to a third were diverted from potential arrest and/or hospitalization.
  •  26% of individuals were linked to a higher level of care.

Proposed Outdoor Dining Regulations

The proposed zoning ordinance amendment will consider ways to allow outdoor dining as an accessory use to a restaurant, carry-out restaurant, restaurant with drive-through, craft beverage production establishment, or other similar use that has a food establishment permit by carrying forward the approach set forth in the COVID Emergency Ordinance. The amendment would codify standards contained in the Emergency Ordinance that address ADA requirements, alcohol, furniture, life safety issues, location, parking, pedestrian circulation, and signs.
