Run for A Seat on MCC’s Governing Board


MCC is looking for district residents to serve on its Governing Board. The Board, which is composed of volunteers elected by the community, sets policy, approves budgets and provides general oversight for Center programs and facilities. Board members have a unique opportunity to improve the quality of life for residents of Dranesville Small District 1A.


Openings:

Three adult board seats and two youth board seats. Adults must be 18 years of age or older on May 20, 2023 (McLean Day 2023). Youth must be 15-17 years old on May 20, 2023—that is, born May 21, 2005, to May 20, 2008.


Term of Office:

Adults serve three-year terms; youths serve one-year terms.


Eligibility:

All candidates must be residents of the MCC’s tax district (Dranesville Small District 1A). One youth candidate from the area served by Langley High School will be elected and one youth candidate from the area served by McLean High School will be elected. Youth candidates need not attend these schools but must run for the seat representing the school area in which they reside.


Candidate Petition:

Each candidate must obtain ten (10) signatures of endorsement from district residents and submit information about his or her candidacy for publication. For a youth candidate, the ten (10) required signatures must be from teens who are 15-17 years old on McLean Day.


Candidates may pick up Candidate Packets in person at MCC during business hours.

Richelle tells a powerful story that includes a Charlottesville not mentioned on the news or social media.

Music Together®

Music Together®, an internationally recognized music and movement program, engages infants, toddlers, preschool children and their parents and other primary caregivers in early childhood music development through mixed-aged classes. It pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement, and it's fun!

For Adults


Introduction to Ballroom Dance

This introductory class gives brand new dancers a great foundation in footwork, musicality and lead-follow in most of the ballroom and rhythm dances. Each month will focus on a different style of ballroom. Students will learn to Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha-Cha, Rumba and Swing! The instructors for this class are Jeff Virchow and Allie O’Hare, who helped train none other than Vernon Davis for his debut on “Dancing with The Stars!” Instructor: Art in Motion Dance Staff.

Ballroom Dance I

This class is for students who have already completed our Introduction to Ballroom Dance class or who have equivalent experience. Cardio, Strength & Balance

A custom blend of cardio conditioning suitable for all levels, this training format uses bodyweight, free weights and balance work to improve coordination, stability and spatial awareness. You will need aerobic shoes, light weights and a yoga mat.

Winter Exhibitions Continue Through Feb. 18

Virtual Artist Talk, January 26, 7 p.m.


Join us next Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. for an online conversation between MPA Curator and Artistic Director Nancy Sausser and the artists featured in our Winter Exhibitions: "In the Round: Dimensional Fiber Works" (featured artists include YunKyoung Cho, Linda Colsh, Michael Gessner, Sookkyung Park and Kristina Penhoet) and "Trees on the Edge: Artwork in Layered Paper by Ronni Jolles." R.S.V.P. here. Sausser and artists will discuss the thoughts and processes behind their respective works featured in "In the Round/Trees on the Edge."

The Emerson Gallery ("In the Round: Dimensional Fiber Works") is open Tuesdays through Fridays, 1- 4 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The Atrium Gallery ("Trees on the Edge: Artwork in Layered Paper by Ronni Jolles") is available during McLean Community Center operating hours. The two exhibitions continue through February 18.

Seeking a creative outlet to get through the winter blues? Making art can reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood, according to this NPR story. MPA has a great lineup of winter and spring art classes for all levels, both in our DuVal Studio and online.

Back by Popular Demand! We're excited to announce the return of our always popular Open Studio, with sessions available on Fridays, 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. We're also pleased to announce that Ahmed Zaidan, who taught during our summer 2022 art camps, will be joining us again for camps in 2023, and is also teaching a NEW adult class, Animation Drawing: Exploring Motion Graphics. Ahmed is an experienced artist and has spent many years directing and instructing other artists on a professional scale. He has exhibited artwork in the Middle East, South Africa, England, and the United States. Visit our website for a detailed description of all of our course offerings, or to register.

Back by popular demand! The Alden’s 2023 production will be a devised theater piece created by the actors in the show. The rehearsal process will involve improv games for idea generation and plot discovery, which will be written into a brand new script by the director and the cast.


Who Can Audition: Anyone age 10-16 who lives in the MCC tax district can audition. Please provide your availability on the audition dates; a 20-minute time block will be confirmed via email. Preregistration is strongly recommended.
