Back to School! August 2022
Tim Bouman, Head of School

Welcome to the 22-23 school year! This summer, for the first time since 2019, we have been able to focus our summer planning on things other than COVID–and for this we are grateful! Even though we are not completely out of the woods yet, it feels good to be in a place where we can plan for a school year in terms of curriculum, student life, and all the activities and events that make Walther a special place rather than on social distancing, mask policies, and hand sanitizers. I am still in awe of how amazing our teachers have been the past two years, showing great flexibility, resilience and patience as we continued to serve our students and families no matter what! In spite of the challenges we faced, we have been blessed.

Our scripture verse for this year is John 10:10b, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." In this coming school year, we are going to encourage our students to embrace everything we have to offer, and to experience an “abundant” school year. How can our students get the most out of their high school experience? They can really throw themselves into their work and strive to learn for the sake of learning, not just to get a grade or a credit. They can join one of our sports or clubs, try out for a play, sing with the choir, or play in the band. They can run for Student Council, create art and poetry for Aura, take part in our service projects, volunteer, join the Mathletes, or even start a new club. Walther has so much to offer–why not take advantage and get involved? A life of Abundance is a life well-lived!

Welcome to Walther’s 69th year. May God bless it and may our Broncos experience a wonderful year of abundance!

Sally Ruecking, Director of Advancement

Dear Friends of Walther,

If you could only know the excitement of our students that recently graduated and are going off to a college, university, military or trade school! I’ve heard from many of them whom will be featured in our upcoming Annual Report, and they are excited for their next journey! They have expressed their gratitude for Walther Christian Academy, which offered them so many opportunities to explore their areas of interest.

The unique thing about this diverse and inclusive school is that our students get to explore, which better serves them for the future in deciding what they would like to do after they graduate. Our students can participate in as many activities as they want: Sports, Music, Drama, Art and Literature Clubs, Chess and Math Clubs, Cheerleading, Choir and Band. As long as they remain academically eligible, they can pursue all of their interests!

If you are reading this, I hope that you can help us spread the word to families and students who are looking for an alternative to a public school education. Why Walther? Walther is a diverse community of students who come from 50 zip codes throughout the Chicagoland area. The majority of our students live in Melrose Park and Maywood, but, some travel as far away as Plainfield, Plano, and Waukegan as well as the far South Side of Chicago to receive an excellent education in a Christian environment, with staff and teachers who truly care about the individual students and their needs.

In the few years now of Covid, we have listened to our families' needs and offered learning that was flexible, be it in school, virtually, or a hybrid of both. We listen, and we care.

Thank you for spreading the word about this amazing school that has increased its enrollment to 290 for the next school year of 2022-2023. If you have any questions, please call the school and ask for our Director of Admissions. Our tuition is competitive and we offer scholarships and need based assistance. Just ask!

Thank you Grace River Forest Church and School!

Since Walther Christian Academy is a non-profit, private school, we depend on our donors and church partners to help us to thrive! This past school year, 208 out of 270 students were supported with scholarships and grant-in-aid to financially assist families that need our help.

One of our partners is Grace Lutheran Church and School in River Forest. In 1954, when the construction of our school was delayed, classes were held at Grace School for two months prior to our opening day of November 8, 1954. Grace Church and School has been with us since then, supporting our mission.

How do they help? Grace is an Association Church that financially supports us several times throughout the year. We are grateful to their congregation which is led by Senior Pastor David Lyle. In addition, Grace School supports us through gifting us with many of their students who leave after 8th grade to attend Walther. The school is led by Principal Bill Koehne, who is a Walther alum along with his wife, Karla. Bill’s son Aiden just graduated and is going on to Augustana College, located in Rock Island, Illinois. Aiden was a star student who was active in many extra-curricular activities and received a solid foundation here to succeed in the future.

We are grateful for the support of Grace and so many others that are far beyond our alumni support. Our local communities help through their volunteerism, participation in our annual Bucking Bronco 5K Run/Walk, and so much more. Please consider supporting this wonderful jewel located on Chicago Avenue and 9th Street in Melrose Park!

If you would like to support our school by spreading the word, attending an event or making a personal or business donation, you will be supporting nearly 300 deserving students in your community who will be tomorrow's leaders!

Thank you!
