We Became Willing

Step 6: “Were entirely ready to remove these defects of character."

At the beginning of treatment, it’s rare that someone is ENTIRELY READY and WILLING to be free from addictive behavior. Instead of asking one’s Higher Power for willingness, a more common and realistic prayer is “Give me the willingness to be willing to be willing...”

Every moment spent in recovery is an active choice. Going to treatment, waking up each morning, going to groups, talking to other addicts, staying sober one day at a time... all of these actions are seemingly small by themselves but as a whole add up to verifiable change. A new life. A better life.

Willingness starts when we open ourselves to trying to do things a different way, even when it’s not easy or comfortable. Over time we are able to see our own shortcomings with better clarity and resolve to change. This is the essence of willingness in recovery. To stay in recovery means to stay willing to change ourselves for the better one day at a time, every day.
