CCE Suffolk is a network of researchers, educators, specialists, and programs, and our mission is to connect that expertise to the people of Suffolk County. That means inviting people to our events, our workshops, and The Suffolk County Farm & Education Center. But just as importantly, it means pushing into the communities that need us most by meeting residents where they are: at schools, libraries, clinics, senior centers, and community organizations across the county.
This month alone, our Community Education team is delivering programs at Sun River Clinics in seven locations from Amityville to Wyandanch, at the Helen Keller Center in Port Washington, at the Smithtown Senior Center, at Sunshine Prevention Center in Centereach, at LI BOCES Family Academy in Oakdale, and at libraries from Selden to Riverhead. Diabetes education, nutrition workshops, kindergarten readiness, screen time guidance, parenting support, all brought directly to the communities that need them most.
Our Agriculture team is on the road too, presenting on seed saving at the Shelter Island and Longwood public libraries, leading a rain gardens workshop at Northport Public Library, hosting a deer management symposium at LIU Post in Brookville, and delivering a native plants presentation over Zoom. On August 31, our Ag Stewardship team is presenting directly to the Suffolk County Legislature’s EPA Committee on the issues that shape this region’s future.
Our 4-H Youth Development program is CCE Suffolk’s youth education arm, and it powers the programming behind both the Suffolk County Farm and our marine education camps. From ocean science to animal care to hands-on agriculture, our 4-H educators bring these programs into schools and community centers across the county. Connecting young people to agriculture, science, and the environment, no bus ride required.
And for anyone who can’t attend in person, we’re building a growing library of virtual programs. The Joy of Gardening, a 10-week fully online garden course, launches registration this month for a mid-September start. Our Parenting Tips series brings expert guidance to families from wherever they are. The classroom walls are gone, and the reach keeps growing!
