We were tasked with creating a professional looking board game that was going to be affordable for everyone...and wanted to keep the manufacturing local. After much trial and error, research and interviewing local vendors, we finally figured it out.
It was still a big investment for us; for example the die just to make the game pieces was nearly $10,000! (and then we had to pay for the game pieces). All the printing and materials were sourced locally, we found a used shrink wrap machine, and started putting together the games in our home.
Now I had about 2,000 games stacked up in the Planetary Strike office (thank goodness we had a spare bedroom) -- but what now? We had created a website, but I hadn’t thought about delivery or promotion of the game to the masses.
I quickly started coming up with a variety of marketing ideas...while my wife Christine rolled her eyes (and I think she made some gagging sounds). Because I’m always right, I started working on my ideas. (She called it spinning my wheels) Then, I started listening to my wife (who is a marketing professional and does have experience in this area). Okay, she was right -- but I had to try!
Next month, hear about our launch party at The Fat Mermaid and our first event that started it all!
