Usually by late July we are starting up our gleaning efforts. Though we have done a few chokecherry and crabapple gleanings, this is going to be a lean season. This spring we had extreme temperature swings. In mid-April we had a record high in the mid 80s, followed by a 60 degree temperature drop. Temperatures below freezing for two nights in a row caused most of those early fruit blossoms to freeze solid. We’re hoping this lack of fruit allows the trees to rest up. After all, we’ve had two gleaning years in a row of over 10,000 pounds. There are a few trees with fruit this season so stayed tuned for gleaning opportunities.
