Homeless Vigil 2023
On the darkest night of the year, the Winter Solstice, people gathered at the Listen Center in White River to remember 21 community members who died in 2023 and whose lives were shortened due to homelessness. Speakers included Becca White, Simon Dennis and Pastor John Gregory-Davis. Following the vigil, volunteers camped out overnight to show solidarity with the area's homeless population. Let's get re-wild
"Rewilding" is the return of species, such as cougars, wolves, and elk, that once lived in the northeast. Wildlands ecologist Shelby Perry explains how this might happen. "We are going to build a better future forest, and we're figuring out what it looks like," said the Corinth, VT, native in her Jan. 2 talk for Suds & Science, a program hosted by the VT Center for Ecostudies at the Norwich Inn.

She wouldn't be quiet
Caroline Cook, Dartmouth Class of '21, recently read from her debut novel Tell Them To Be Quiet and Wait at the Howe Library. It tells the tale of the first female scholar at an all-male rural NH college, a story based on the life of Dr. Hannah Croasdale, Dartmouth's first female professor. "She wanted to be the best scientist she could be," Cook says.
Many thanks to Jared Jenisch of the Howe for sharing her lecture with JAM.

As we look forward to Dr. King's birthday on Monday, take a look at some of the many local tributes to his legacy on JAM On-Demand: Jan Abbott recalls King's insistence that people keep moving forward, Joe Major remembers King's first speech following Rosa Parks' arrest, among others. Also, take time to re-watch King's 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech in contemplation of our unfinished work to create a just society for all.
