February, 2021
Dear Friends,

Every February, Volunteers in Medicine has an Annual Appreciation Luncheon to recognize our volunteers, donors and partners. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we cannot host the in-person event; but during this critical time, we want to recognize those that continue to understand our mission and the importance of keeping our community healthy, well and working.

2020 was a difficult time for the entire global population. We sincerely thank all those that continue to volunteer, donate and support the clinic in providing FREE medical, dental and behavioral health services to those that need it now more than ever.

Warmest Regards,

Kelly Ranieli

Happenings at VIM in 2020
Kimmy Nguyen, Clinical Pharmacist at VIM, helps organize the Medicine Closet. VIM is able to get medications through the Patient Assistant Program and donated supplies from national companies. We also raise funds to purchase medications and all are provided free to the patients. Dr. Nguyen and the Wilkes University Pharmacy students also provide chronic disease management services and medication education.
Dr. Frances Feudale, Medical Director at VIM, talks with a patient about his treatment plan. VIM obtained the national accreditation of Patient Centered Medical Home in June of 2020. Interprofessional Care Teams collaborate on holistic care to each patient.
VIM established a Healthy Smile program in 2014. Darcie Schaffer, Manager of the Dental Clinic, visits day cares, private schools and pre-schools to promote the importance of good oral hygiene and healthy eating. Many facilities are not allowing visitors so it has been challenging during the pandemic. We have been creative with Zoom presentations, outside visits and program bag distributions.
Tamara Panowicz, Social Care Coordinator, assists a patient with our Health Equity program. This particular patient received guidance with getting a job, obtaining housing and was provided a bicycle for transportation. Tamara also focuses on counseling, case management and screening of patients.
VIM works closely with many local agencies to ensure patients receive the resources they need for healthy wellbeing. Walgreens partnered with the clinic in hosting three flu clinics in the Fall of 2020. The Wilkes-Barre Department of Health also provided free flu vaccines to the clinic which are available upon request.
Ivanna Kolesa, Dental Hygienist, examines and provides cleaning of a patients teeth. A goal of VIM is to get our patients out of pain, educate on good oral hygiene and schedule for 6 month cleaning appointments. VIM has a core group of volunteer dentists that focus on extractions and fillings. Dentures are also provided to patients.
