No Rest for the Weary (Landscaper)

As we do each year, we take a short break during the holidays so most of Team Orange can spend time with family and recharge. This year’s pause was interrupted a bit by winter preventative services that needed to be completed last week, but overall the break has ended—and our crews are back at it.

We’re heading into a very busy stretch as we finish cleaning up from the fall leaf drop and address storm-caused debris throughout our landscapes. The wind storms in the weeks leading up to the holidays made quite a mess on many properties that we had already cleaned up from the fall leaves, so we’re working hard to get everything looking sharp again.

Along with completing a final fall clean-up, we’re also beginning our winter services to prepare for spring—which will be here before you know it.

We often get asked: “What do you do in the winter?”

Answer: “We are very busy preparing for spring!”

Winter Pruning

One of the most important winter services we perform is seasonal pruning. Pruning during the summer is mostly focused on managing new growth. Winter pruning is focused on structure and rejuvenation, helping plants maintain their shape, improve long-term health, and prepare for their spring growth flush.

Shrub Bed Clean up

Another key winter task—especially after a messy fall and early winter—is a comprehensive raking and grooming of shrub beds. This removes built-up leaves and debris, freshens the appearance of the beds, and gets them ready for pre-emergence weed control applications and re-barkdusting (if planned for your property).

Shrub Bed Pre-Emergence

To prevent weed germination through the spring and summer, we also treat all shrub bed areas with a pre-emergence weed control product. This helps stop weeds before they sprout and become established—keeping shrub beds cleaner, reducing the need for hand weeding, and supporting a healthier landscape throughout the growing season.

Winter Turf Moss Control

With our dark, wet winters, moss can grow quickly and thrive in lawns. We recommend moss treatment twice yearly—once in December or January, and again in March or April. Staying on this schedule keeps moss under control and helps the grass survive the winter season and thrive going into spring.

Winter Pansy Maintenance

Due to our mild winter, most pansies are doing quite well. However, weeds are growing and general debris is collecting in these areas. We also treat our pansies monthly with fungicides to prevent disease. If you look around, you’ll likely see other contractors’ pansies infected with disease and beginning to decline. This proactive treatment keeps our flower displays healthier, fuller, and vibrant longer.

Winter Shrub Fertilization

Virtually all lawns, shrubs and trees get fertilized during the winter as this is the most important time

It's not the most fun time of year to be outdoors, but it's an important time for us to prepare to help ensure your landscape is beautiful and healthy this coming season.
