Your Independent Neighborhood Garden Nursery
Beautiful Plants and Inspired Designs since 1954
We will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 2, for paving.
| | Dear Friends of Anderson's La Costa, | | |
Welcome to the Holidays! What a festive time of year. It is wonderful how as the days grow shorter, holiday lights throughout our streets, neighborhoods, and towns brighten the colder, darker days and make everything feel cozier.
Please keep in mind that the nursery will be CLOSED on TUESDAY, DEC. 2, for paving. We tried to pick a quieter day to not interrupt your planting projects. We will be open on Wednesday at our regular 8:30 am. We will also be closed on Christmas Day, and closing early on both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
Poinsettias, Bulbs, Wreaths, and More for the Holidays...
We are excited to bring you our annual holiday nursery merchandise. Beautiful orange, white, mixed-color, and classic red poinsettias, along with pink Princettias, are looking amazing. You will also find Christmas cactus, orchids, and anthuriums in the indoor greenhouse, along with pre-made arrangements for holiday gift giving and decorating.
| | Paperwhites, Ferrari Red, and White Christmas Amaryllis bulbs are stocked and ready for you. This year, you will find bulbs tucked into the Fertilizer building. Fresh wreaths and garland provide the holiday greenery we've come to love, and hanging Tillandsia (air plant) ornaments twirl on their display tree. | | |
Much of our Garden Gift Shop is on sale 20% off for the holiday season, with a huge selection of Woodstock Windchimes, bird feeders and supplies, solar lanterns, metallic and shell-decorated animal statuary and wall hangings, San Diego Hat Company hats, and Anderson's La Costa T-shirts.
There is also a wonderful selection of gift items, such as framed butterflies, ready-to-paint art kits by Coconut Mommy, and greeting cards by talented local artists like Michele Gorcey and Pam Evitts, which are not a part of this sale.

What's New at the Nursery
...by Steven Froess
Hello newsletter subscribers!
We made it to the final newsletter of 2025. I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season so far. Thanksgiving always comes and goes so quickly, but it’s one of my favorite holidays for spending time with family and friends, enjoying fantastic food, and taking a day of rest.
I enjoyed my annual outing to Palm Springs for some golf on Black Friday. It was 80 degrees without a cloud in sight- see pics below. Felt like a summer day. December is full of unpredictable weather (hopefully more rain) as we approach the shortest day of the year and start building towards spring again. Before we begin thinking about how nice spring will be, let's take a moment to enjoy what winter has to offer: a chance for plants to rest (some even need chill hours, like blueberries and deciduous fruit trees) and an opportunity to enjoy some unusual plants that come to life and bloom during the winter months.
| | Winter-blooming flowers are now beginning to reach their peak. Cyclamen is a classic bedding plant for shady areas or containers. There is a wide variety of colors now, including the new and very popular purple and lavender. For sun to partial sun, Pansies, violas, snapdragons, sweet pea starts, and Icelandic poppies are the eye-catching winter-blooming flowers. | | It is definitely Camellia time as some of the sasanquas are finishing their bloom, and the japonicas are just starting. Sasanqua camellias tolerate more light, have smaller leaves and flowers, and bloom earlier in the season. Japonica camellias need less light, have larger leaves, and bigger flowers. Some of my favorites in stock include: Nuccio's Gem, Nuccio's Pearl, Bob Hope, Silver Waves, Hanamigasa, Midnight, and High Fragrance. | | Proteaceae such as Protea Mini King, Banksia Schnapper Point and Ericifolia, and many Grevillea are at their peak bloom, loaded with nectar for hummingbirds. We have some new grafted grevillea specimens: Honey Gem, Amber Passion, Peaches and Cream tree form. It’s always nice to have a mix of plants that bloom at different times, both for pollinators and for a beautiful aesthetic. | | |
The Holiday season is here! Gift giving can be tricky, depending on the person. If that person is into gardening or plants, we've got you covered. Our pre-made arrangements of paperwhites, succulents, indoor plants, and flowers make a great quick gift in a pinch.
Holiday plants to get you in the Christmas spirit, such as poinsettias (some great varieties this year), fresh wreaths and garland (nothing better than the smell of evergreens), paperwhite and amaryllis bulbs, Christmas cactus, tillandsia ornaments (made in-house, go Hanna!), gift certificates, and of course bonsai plants! Bonsai continues to grow in popularity (I'm even getting hooked), so be sure to check out our selection from beginner to advanced, with even some in-house-made, unique ones.

I'm so thankful to be here another year with such great customers and employees. I hope you all enjoy your holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you at the nursery!
Your local horticulturalist,
Steven
