Meet Chastity Richey, DSW, MSW, LMSW
Family Success Navigator
|
|
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Chastity Richey, who has been nothing less than a true blessing and an absolute rockstar since joining Team TLC! We are so very pleased to announce Chastity as our first-ever Licensed Social Worker and Family Success Navigator. Chastity is fulfilling TLCâs mission to provide deeper services to the families of Grier Heights through TLCâs Preschool and Family Success programs. Supporting, guiding, educating, coaching, and empowering parents have always been integral to our mission. A successful student needs an engaged parent, every step of the way. Chastity is here to serve families as they build their social networks and move toward increased social mobility, self-sufficiency, and self-efficacy.
Chastity brings over 20 years of Social Work experience as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), which aligns perfectly with her Family Success Navigator role. Since she joined us in August, her focus has been on building rapport with families, providing case management, networking with community resources, and empowering parents. Chastity is now moving into meeting with parents to begin goal-setting to create positive outcomes in their lives.
As relationships develop, families will work with Chastity to define their unique challenges. What stands in the way of achieving goals, such as employment, stable housing, household budgeting, completing a GED, or home ownership? Chastity will walk alongside and guide as parents define individual goals, identify barriers, and develop an action plan. No goal is too big or too small. Chastity is well-rounded as a Social Worker, bringing a depth and breadth of experience, deep faith, and a compassionate heart to serve others!
In the past month, several parents have requested assistance with needs such as, but not limited to, food, beds, rent, and bus passes. Each TLC family has been successfully connected with community resources, averting serious family crises.

New Partnerships & Community Resources!
|
With the addition of Chastity Richey as Family Success Navigator, TLC is now uniquely positioned as a hub for early education, parent support, and family services in Grier Heights. We are immensely grateful for the support of our Myers Park Presbyterian Church family as we expand parent and child services. Connections with community resources help build social capital, one of the many steps to improve social mobility among the families of TLC.
This fall, we welcome four new, important friends to TLCâs support network.
-
Furnish for Good - we refer families needing household furnishings to âshopâ the showroom and choose donated items at a very low cost. This goes a long way towards making a house a home.
-
Baby Bundles - many TLC moms welcome new babies during the school year. Baby Bundles provides âbundlesâ of clothing and baby essentials.
-
Care Ringâs Nurse-Family Partnership - through Smart Start of Mecklenburg County, enrolled expectant moms are matched with their own RN, who will be with them for two years of case management services, building a supportive, nurturing relationship to ensure the health and well-being of the whole family.
-
Parent-Child Interactive Therapy - our friends at Hope Community Clinic of East Charlotte have placed an on-site clinician at TLC for counseling services.

Green Apple Gig was a HUGE success - thanks to you!
|
|
Our annual Green Apple Gig was held on September 17th at Myers Park Presbyterian Church Outreach Center. And let's just say it was EPIC! With more than 250 buddies, we had everything from bounce houses to scrumptious food trucks, not to mention a DJ spinning tunes. The best part was the warm feeling of community and family spirit. We had so much fun - you can see it in everyone's face!
For TLC, there's a deeper significance... The Gig is one way we continue our mission of creating real fellowship opportunities and authentic relationships within our community to uplift and benefit all. We're thankful to all our friends whose generosity made this year's Gig a celebration of family and community. Funds raised through sponsorships ensure that the families of TLC will be school-ready!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of the TLC family.

Would you like to volunteer as a TLC Reading Buddy?
|
|
As part of our Family Success programming this winter, we are outlining a "Meals By Mom" series for TLC parents, exploring nutrition, budgeting, smart grocery shopping, meal planning, and healthy options for busy families. We intend to equip each interested TLC mom with a slow cooker and a recipe book with submissions from friends of TLC.
|
|
The Meals By Mom project is a fantastic way to volunteer with TLC!
Some of the volunteer roles are:
- Donate or raise funds for 30 new slow cookers for TLC moms;
- Submit or collect family-friendly slow cooker recipes;
- Help with the layout and design of TLC Friends & Family cookbook;
- Offer a demonstration on your favorite slow cooker or busy family meal.
- Join us for a February Fellowship Lunch at the conclusion of Meals By Mom!

2023-24 marks a very special year for TLC. We now have the capacity to do what we have long dreamed of, offering deeper services to young children and their families in Grier Heights.
Family Support is now Family Success! We will coach parents to break the cycle of crises through counseling, coaching, and accountability. For example, rather than becoming food-insecure and needing a food pantry referral, we will meet, coach, and guide parents to create a budget and plan for their food benefits to last the whole month.
Identifying needs, wants, obstacles, and crafting an action plan will grow parentsâ self-sufficiency and strengthen their families. And TLC will be there every step of the way. With our new community partnerships and our Family Success program, great things are on the horizon. We are grateful that YOU are with us, changing lives for the better!
All of the work of TLC, from providing school-readiness for at-risk children of Grier Heights to helping build stronger, healthier families, is due to the community support we receive from donations from friends like you, private foundations, NC Pre-K reimbursement, and congregations. The fact is, we rely on our friends. Please consider a year-end gift to TLC today. Help us CONTINUE THE LEARNING!
As always, your contribution to TLC is 100% tax deductible. The Learning Collaborative is a 501 c 3 organization, recognized as a charity by the Internal Revenue Service. Please contact Pam Gray for our FEIN. or with any questions about making a gift. THANK YOU!

Discover, Learn, Play, and Grow!
|
We recently completed our Discovery Den, a dedicated room for occupational therapy, art, music, and exploration on a carefully prepared ââprovocationâ.
Stations with relevant materials for the children to visit in small groups are updated monthly, to align with the current curriculum unit. Children learn best through first-hand experiences, which in turn impacts school readiness. Yet, many 2 and 3-year-olds begin TLCâs Preschool below developmental expectations for their age. This is why our environment is intentionally filled with lessons, items, areas, and ideas to provoke thought, play, and exploration. Play-active learning aims to motivate, stimulate, and support children in their development of motor skills, concepts, language, communication skills, and concentration.
