USF AMA CHAPTER CLEANS UP AT NATIONAL COMPETITION
USF AMA chapter wins big

The USF AMA chapter placed No. 3 in the nation for the American Marketing Association case competition. The team made it into the national finals for the case write-up and competed with its presentation in front of the client, Cotton Inc., for the prize. The ranking was the highest USF AMA has ever ranked in this competition, said Loran Jarrett, adviser for the team, "and we are so incredibly proud of the five students who made this happen." Helping out were  Luke Liska, a PhD candidate, faculty members Mike Bowen, Pat Nickinson and Jill Solomon, all of whom showed up for rehearsals to help prepare the team for the presentation. Besides placing No. 3 in the case competition, the chapter was ranked No. 20 in the nation.

* Triparna de Vreede,  associate chair of the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department and academic director of the Master of Science in Management Program, was interviewed on WTVT Fox 13 about diversity in the workplace. To read the what she said, click here.

* Seckin Ozkul, operations and supply chain management faculty member in the Marketing Department, recently finalized funding for two Florida Department of Transportation research grants totaling more than $500,000. They include grants for studies of land-use analysis for logistics activity centers and trade imbalance and empty backhaul.

* Matt Mullarkey, program director of the DBA program and instructor with the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department, is leading a Shimmer Research team of researchers looking at developing an early warning system for those at risk of contracting COVID-19. To read more, click here.

* Sharon Hanna-West, a Muma College of Business graduate programs' faculty member and director of the Sustainable Business Concentration at the Patel College of Global Sustainability, participated in a virtial panel discussion presented by the U.S. Green Building Council's Women in Green event.


ALUMNI NOTES

Stephanie Goforth ('82, Business Administration) was chosen as vice chair of the USF Board of Trustees. She also serves as chair of the St. Petersburg Campus Advisory Board.

* Laura Wilkie ('11, Marketing) has taken a position as executive assistant/senior marketing associate at Raymond James.

Brittany Gymrek ('13, MBA; '09, Marketing and Management) was named vice president of marketing at Skinny Mixes.

Jim Campbel l ('84, Marketing) has been appointed media supervisor at Mower Agency. With more than thirty years' experience in media, he most recently held the position of media supervisor at The Fort Group.

Chuck Kearns ('89, MBA) recently was awarded a Chief EMS Officer designation through the Center of Public Safety Excellence in Chatham County, Georgia. Kearns, who is Chatham Emergency Services chief and CEO, is one of only 148 public safety chief EMS officers worldwide who hold this professional designation.

Joe Rendon ('00, MAcc) has joined the firm of Kerkering, Barberio & Co. CPAs as tax manager on the international team. He has 25 years of experience in international, federal, state and local, and partnership taxation.

Joe Nestor ('20, MBA) was named senior associate business operations analyst with JPMorgan Chase.

* Dave Hilfman ('82, Finance) was named to the board of directors of Direct Travel, as its industry expert. Hilfman was honored in 2018 by the USF Alumni Association as a Distinguished Alumnus. He has more than 35 years of direct industry experience, retiring from United Airlines at the end of 2018.


*  Most of the events planned and announced for the foreseeable future have been canceled or postponed because of the threat of spreading COVID-19. Check with venues and event organizers for more information. Among the events canceled: the Muma College of Business Teaching Symposium, the Conversation with a CEO series, the Sport and Entertainment Analytics Conference, events being held in observance of the Florida SBDC at USF and several others including the spring commencement ceremonies. With regard to events hosted by the Muma College of Business, those who were invited and registered to attend most likely have been notified of the cancellations. Watch for emails from the college and updates in the newsletter about upcoming events.
