A place to rest

At the end of a long day, putting on your comfiest pajamas and sinking your head into a soft pillow is like taking the weight of the world off of your shoulders. We often take for granted that there will be a comfortable sofa, chair, or bed at home where we can let go of the cares of the day.

But for many in our community, there is no bed. Sometimes there is not even a table at which to share a meal, or a soft chair to sit in while reading a book to a child. For over 20 years, ECHO Furniture Bank has collected gently used donated furniture so those without can have these most basic of comforts.

The founder of ECHO Furniture Bank, Jon Hinkle, shared the story of Grace*, a grandmother juggling working and raising her grandson. “She was anxious because she needed an operation on her back so she could continue working, but the post-op instructions included several weeks of bed rest,” explains Jon. “But, she had no bed.”

There are various reasons why our clients need furniture. One person may be fleeing domestic abuse, another may have lost everything in the destructive forces of a hurricane or tornado, and many are transitioning out of homelessness but have no funds left to purchase furniture after paying first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and turning on utilities.

Others are like Grace, sleeping on a sofa because whatever extra money she earned went toward furnishing her grandson's room.

ECHO Furniture Bank steps in and literally fills the void by redistributing beds, dressers, sofas and dining tables that have been generously donated by individuals and businesses. Because of these donations, we can convert an empty apartment into a comfortable home in about an hour! ECHO accomplishes all of this with a staff of three employees, manager Stephen Blakemore, Daniel Spitler, Hunter Brauch and several loyal volunteers.

Once Grace contacted us, she had a bed by the weekend. Her operation was successful, and within a month she was back at work. She and her grandson are just one example of the 150 to 175 family units served by the Furniture Bank each year, and we are so thankful to be able to help them.

When you sink your head into your pillow and pull your blankets up around you tonight, think of Grace and others like her, and how you can help. Furniture can be a priceless gift from someone who no longer needs it to someone who desperately does!

Trash to Treasure

That old desk that you never use anymore. The bedframe from your spare room that you’ve been meaning to get rid of. The table and chairs that get replaced with something new. Before you drag these items to the curb and call to schedule a bulk trash pickup, call the ECHO Furniture Bank instead!

Just last year, the Furniture Bank of Tallahassee found a new home for over seven tons of discarded furniture, keeping it out of a landfill and giving it a new life in the homes of our neighbors who are desperately trying to put their lives back together.

Our modest 2,000 square foot warehouse includes a small showroom for those clients who are able to come and select their own furniture, but over half of our clients are also eligible to have their furniture delivered to them.

Our clients come through referrals from local agencies working with our neighbors who are transitioning out of homelessness:

These partnerships help us provide furniture to people who need it, keeping an average of $500 in their pockets for food and other essentials and more than 20 tons of reusable items that would have otherwise been thrown away.

How can you help? Convert your trash to treasure by calling us at 850-224-3246, ext. 205 or emailing dspitler@echotlh.orgto pick up your gently used basic furniture, specifically bedframes, dressers, sofas, and dining tables. They’ll enjoy a new life with a family who needs them!

Board Member Spotlight-

Kenneth Simmonds

ECHO Board Treasurer Kenneth Simmonds was surprised when he was encouraged to join the board. “After doing research on the good deeds of ECHO, I felt honored to be recommended for such an organization,” he says. “Although I have not struggled like those in need of the services of ECHO, I have encountered trials and tribulations throughout my short span of life and feel I have come far enough to provide an example of fortitude to those who may be still struggling. The opportunity to give back and to those in need of assistance by being part of this organization is satisfying.”

Kenneth has been a Realtor for 17 years, bringing his expertise in business economics to real estate investments for his clients. In addition to serving as treasurer for ECHO, Kenneth is a council member of the UF Shands Children’s Division in Tallahassee, and volunteers for the Tallahassee Board of Realtors, having served on the Government Relations Committee and spending two years as chairperson for the Parade of Homes.

Kenneth most enjoys how ECHO helps people find a glimmer of hope that they can overcome temporary strife in their lives. He enjoys reading John Grisham and James Patterson, working out at Cross Fit, and studying chess strategy and tactics so he is always ready for his next match. “There are very few activities I would not be interested in trying,” he says, “and having a great conversation about the experience would bring even more enjoyment!”

We are thankful for Kenneth and the time he gives to ECHO - he is certainly one of the stars in our efforts for Tallahassee.

Can I help?

Absolutely! To quote the wisdom of Charles Dickens, "No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another."
