In the last few weeks, our focus has been on AI in Adult Social Care (ASC), looking at both the good stuff and the challenges. Below, you'll find a couple of short write-ups about recent events, along with links for more info.

The AI in Social Care Summit at the University of Oxford united professionals, carers, tech companies, experts, and individuals with lived experiences to explore AI's role in social care. Discussions highlighted AI's benefits, such as reducing isolation and preventing falls, alongside challenges like fostering human connection and mitigating bias.

The event concluded with The Oxford guidance on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Adult Social Care and a Call for Action, urging government-led innovation. Special thanks to Caroline Emmer De Albuquerque Green, PhD, Katie Thorn, and Daniel Casson for organising this impactful summit.

Following this, our webinar, "A.I. Unleashed - Collaborating for a Smarter Future in Adult Social Care," featured insightful presentations on the responsible use of generative AI. Sam Harper provided an overview of AI's data utilisation, emphasising the importance of the "3 H rule" – helpful, harmless, and honest. Katie Thorn shared guidance from the Institute for Ethics in AI at Oxford University, focusing on human rights and dignity. Khaled Gamiet demonstrated an AI system to assist with administrative tasks, highlighting the need for human oversight.

The event underscored the importance of robust AI practices and collaboration in social care.

This report provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by care providers and highlights areas needing improvement. It outlines the progress made in raising awareness and strengthening defences, while also identifying existing gaps.

A key finding is that access to cyber security expertise through the Digital Care Hub, provided by Better Security, Better Care, is consistently linked to better cyber security practices compared to the average.

Cutting-edge tech introduced in social care

Care leaders will be trained to use the latest technology to improve patient care, free up staff time and help people live independently in their own homes for longer.

Speaking at Unison’s 2025 National Health Care Conference, the Health and Social Care Secretary also outlined a series of wider measures to boost the recruitment and retention of care staff. The plans will professionalise the adult social care workforce and help staff progress in their careers, leading to better pay and recognition.
