Dear friend,
As we move into the second week of social distancing and the first week of shelter in place, I’d like to share some thoughts and news with you.
At this time, it is vital that we focus on our mission and theory of change and evaluate how we can continue to fulfill our mission in this new environment.
IVYP mitigates the effects of poverty, racism and trauma by providing high-quality, trauma informed child care, comprehensive, culturally sensitive family support and visionary community leadership.
So, how are we continuing to do this work?
Child care
: While our child serving programs are closed, we are actively supporting our students and our families in new, creative ways. This week, our school-aged team designed and launched
Kids Corner
on our IVYP website. Kids corner is full of resources for students including mindfulness activities to address added stress, learning activities, virtual field trips and more. We will continue to add resources to this site regularly. Our Children’s Center staff have been busy reaching out to each family individually to check in and provide support and resources. The Children’s Center team is working to implement a text-based communication system to support all of our families.
Family Support:
Our emergency food pantry is open by appointment. Last week, we provided food to 78 families, made up of 265 individuals. This food supplements the food provided to children through the schools’ breakfast and lunch service. In addition to food needs, we are seeing how vital access to technology and internet is and will continue to be for our entire community. We are reaching out individually to educate families not only about where to find resources, but also about how to remain safe and healthy during this time.
Community Leadership:
For the past 18 months, IVYP has convened the Goleta Valley Community Partnership Network in order to build relationships between organizations that work with families in the Goleta Valley. Now this network has been activated to share information, support one another, identify needs, and source solutions. As a result, we have been able to respond more quickly to needs that are coming up for our community. We have launched a
COVID-19 Community Resources
page on our website and are updating it regularly to ensure those that look to IVYP for leadership are able to receive the information they need to weather this storm.
Reflections
: This pandemic is highlighting disparities in our community. At a time when the best way for us to meet and communicate is on-line, many of our families do not have wi-fi in their homes. Those who do not have computer literacy or access are missing out on the resources and information that is vital during this time. Our most vulnerable children and families are even more invisible than ever. I am so grateful to be part of a network with the Goleta Union School District, the City of Goleta, the Isla Vista Community Services District and the Santa Barbara County non-profit community who are all working together to care for the families of the Goleta Valley and beyond. Our strength is in our relationships.
This is a time that calls for courage. We are committed to paying our staff during this time. We are committed to overcoming obstacles in order to support our community. We are committed to open, transparent communication for the benefit of all. We are committed to working remotely wherever possible and to working safely in the essential services we are providing to our community.
I know this is a time of great uncertainty for all of us. If you are able to support to IVYP at this time, it will help us continue to survive this crisis.

Estimado/a friend,
A medida que avanzamos hacia la segunda semana de distanciamiento social y la primera semana de refugio, me gustaría compartir algunos pensamientos y noticias con ustedes.
En este momento, es vital que nos enfoquemos en nuestra misión y teoría del cambio y evaluar cómo podemos continuar cumpliendo nuestra misión en este nuevo ambiente.
IVYP mitiga los efectos de la pobreza, el racismo y el trauma al brindar cuidado infantil de alta calidad, informado sobre el trauma, apoyo familiar integral y culturalmente sensible y liderazgo comunitario visionario.

Apoyo familiar:
Nuestra despensa de alimentos de emergencia está abierta con cita previa. La semana pasada, proporcionamos alimentos a 78 familias, formadas por 265 individuos. Esta comida complementa la comida provista a los niños a través del servicio de desayuno y almuerzo de la escuela. Además de las necesidades alimentarias, estamos viendo cuán vital es y seguirá siendo el acceso a la tecnología e Internet para toda nuestra comunidad. Liderazgo comunitario:

Ahora esta red se ha activado para compartir información, apoyarse mutuamente, identificar necesidades y buscar soluciones. Reflexiones:
Esta pandemia está destacando las disparidades en nuestra comunidad. En un tiempo en que la mejor manera de conocernos y comunicarnos es en línea, muchas de nuestras familias no tienen wifi en sus hogares. Aquellos que no tienen conocimientos informáticos o acceso a computadoras se están perdiendo los recursos y la información que es vital durante este tiempo. Nuestros niños y familias más vulnerables son aún más invisibles que nunca. Estoy muy agradecido de ser parte de una red con el Goleta Union School District, la Ciudad de Goleta, el Isla Vista Community Services District (Distrito de Servicios Comunitarios de Isla Vista) y la comunidad de organizaciones sin fines de lucro del Condado de Santa Bárbara que están trabajando juntos para cuidar a las familias de Goleta Valle y más allá.
