April 12, 2022

Dear Sharon,

At midnight last night we finished one of the most impactful sessions of my legislative career. On Saturday, we overrode the Governor's vetoes of the Time to Care Act and the Abortion Care Access Act. Marylanders will soon have access to paid family and medical leave and reproductive care when and where they need it. Those two bills are the two major legislative projects that I have been working on since even before my first election twelve years ago.

In recognition of my work and leadership, I was appointed late last night as the Vice Chair of the Health and Government Operations Committee. It's an honor to serve Marylanders in this capacity and I look forward to new challenges and opportunities to serve alongside my dear friend, Chairman Joseline Pena-Melnyk.

We've accomplished so much that it’s hard to share a short summary -- but here’s my personal top ten:

  1. Time to Care Act (Paid Family & Medical Leave)
  2. Abortion Care Access Act
  3. Climate Solutions Now
  4. Banning Ghost Guns
  5. Healthy Babies Equity Act
  6. Retiree Tax Cuts
  7. Supporting Healthcare Heroes
  8. $100M+ Investment in Childcare
  9. Expanding Dental Coverage to 800k Marylanders
  10. Eliminating Waitlists for Home & Community Based Services for the Elderly and Disabled.

I also sponsored several other bills that passed or otherwise became state policy*:

  • Ensuring HIV treatment for sexual assault survivors (HB 970)
  • Expanding access to autism treatment (HB 627)*
  • Ensuring quality dental care (HB 969)
  • Modernizing massage therapy licensure requirements (HB 220)
  • Supporting innovative living solutions for seniors (HB 972, HB 1051)
  • Keeping a lid on drug prices (HB 973
  • Expanding access to dental treatment for pregnant patients (HB 219)
  • Securing health care information privacy (HB 213)

For a complete overview of the 2022 session, keep an eye out for my end of session letter that will go out in the next week.
