LAAC in Action
Welcome Allison!

Allison joined LAAC in 2019 as the Development and Communications Assistant. She is a UC Berkeley undergraduate, majoring in Public Health and double-minoring in Global Poverty and Practice and Creative Writing.

Allison is deeply devoted to advocating for women's rights and access to basic needs. She currently runs PERIOD at Berkeley, an organization that fights to end period poverty and stigma surrounding menstruation. She also serves as a City Commissioner representing District 5 for the City of Berkeley, where she sits on The Commission on the Status of Women and leads the Subcommittee on Women's Homelessness and Domestic Violence.

Join us in welcoming Allison to the LAAC team! You can reach her at  Alu@LAAConline.org.
LAAC and CLA Summit

On September 6, 2019, LAAC and the California Lawyers Association together convened a summit: Access to Justice - Overcoming the "Justice Gap" with Practical Solutions.

A variety of stakeholders with unique perspectives came together and identified possible solutions to access issues including availability of court resources, rural access challenges, and increasing pro bono. LAAC thanks everyone who sat on panels especially our non-profit members Tiela Chalmers, David Daniels, Ilene Jacobs,  Erin Smith, and Gary Smith.
Mindfulness Retreat for Legal Aid Attorneys

LAAC is committed to supporting our community by providing the tools you need to keep your life in balance. We are partnering with Warrior One on our first one-day mindfulness retreat and  opening it up to a small number of legal aid attorneys.

We are currently looking for sponsorship from law firms in order to offer either reduced pricing or travel stipends. Depending on sponsorship, the cost will be between $60-$140. There will be MCLE at the event and we will update the total hours as soon as the agenda is finalized. Read more about wellness and legal aid here.

If you are interesting in being notified when registration is open, please email: trainings@LAAConline.org

Wellness Survey:

If you work in a legal aid office, we want to hear how you handle stress and what programs your organization offers to help you out. We are separately polling Executive Directors to get recommendations for vendors, so, here, we just want to know what you like, what you don't like, and what ideas you have for your organization to expand support.  As our thanks for letting us pick your brain, we're going to pull four names for $10 Amazon cards. Take the survey here!

Thank you Dan Bradley Fellows!

T hank you to our 2019 Dan Bradley Fellows, Jorge Lopez Espindola and Anthony Lee, for completing their summer internships at LAAC member organizations, Legal Aid of Marin and California Rural Legal Assistance, respectively.

Here's what Jorge had to say of his experience at Legal Aid of Marin (LAM):  "I focused on housing and employment law.  [This opportunity allowed me] to take two trips to West Marin and talk with dairy farm workers. LAM and West Marin Community Services cooked dinner for the farm workers, and we were there to establish a relationship with them."

Also a big shout out to Anthony who worked on housing and eviction cases for migrant workers, know-your-rights workshops, research into courts upholding  Jameson v. Desta,  and  field monitoring of rural California farms to encourage their compliance with state and federal health and safety standards.  Anthony shared , " These are only a few highlights of the work I performed during my internship, but are among my most valued experiences. I appreciate immensely the support LAAC has afforded me through the Dan Bradley Fellowship. This work has stoked my drive to complete my legal education and continue fighting for justice."

We have two upcoming NITA trial skills  trainings
  • December 2019 in the Bay Area. We are working to finalize space and dates. Registration will open in the next couple weeks.
  • April 6-8, 2020 at San Joaquin College of Law near Fresno. Registration will open in early 2020.
If you would like to be notified when December registration opens, please email LAAC Training Associate, Jenna Mowat, at  jmowat@LAAConline.org.
