2027 Program to be Announced August 1

Meet Rozella Kennedy
Rozella Kennedy is a San Miguel-based writer, creator, and cultural strategist using story and history to strengthen leadership, solidarity, and Beloved Community. She is the Nautilus Award-winning author of Our Brave Foremothers: Celebrating 100 Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous Women Who Changed the Course of History. As founder of Brave Sis Project—an ecosystem of storytelling, learning, and practice rooted in BIPOC foremothers and cultural legacy—she is the creator of the Solidarity and Unity Lab and the #SistoryLessons newsletter. She is working on a new book series, World Brave Sis, spotlighting global she-roes of color.
In this newsletter, Rozella will be writing “Discover Global Voices,” a monthly series exploring culture, voice, and creation across regions and time. “Long before the printed page, communities used speech, song, theater, ritual, and other living forms to pass along knowledge, resist oppression, celebrate joy, and hold memory.” Each installment will spotlight both historical legacies and contemporary voices carrying that tradition forward—the first issue next month featuring Chinese storytelling arts.

Conoce a Rozella Kennedy
Rozella Kennedy es una escritora, creadora y estratega cultural radicada en San Miguel que utiliza la narrativa y la historia para fortalecer el liderazgo, la solidaridad y la "Comunidad Amada" (Beloved Community). Es la autora (ganadora del Premio Nautilus) de Our Brave Foremothers: Celebrating 100 Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous Women Who Changed the Course of History. Como fundadora de Brave Sis Project —un ecosistema de narración, aprendizaje y práctica arraigado en las antepasadas BIPOC (negras, indígenas y personas de color) y el legado cultural— es la creadora del Solidarity and Unity Lab y del boletín #SistoryLessons. Actualmente trabaja en una nueva serie de libros, World Brave Sis, que destaca a heroínas globales de color.
En este boletín, Rozella escribirá “Descubre Voces Globales”, una serie mensual que explora la cultura, la voz y la creación a través de distintas regiones y épocas. “Mucho antes de la página impresa, las comunidades utilizaban la palabra, el canto, el teatro, el ritual y otras formas vivas para transmitir conocimientos, resistir a la opresión, celebrar la alegría y mantener la memoria”. Cada entrega destacará tanto los legados históricos como las voces contemporáneas que llevan esa tradición hacia el futuro; el primer número del próximo mes estará dedicado a las artes narrativas chinas.

Reminder: Our Writing Contest is Now Open
A reminder that you have until September 15 to enter our annual writing contest, whose goal is to recognize outstanding, emerging writers in both English and Spanish. Winners will be announced November 15.
Submit your entry via this link.
Submissions of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction/memoir are welcome. Entries are limited to unpublished work by emerging writers who have not yet published 10,000 copies of any book. Multiple submissions are permitted, with the payment of the fee for each separate entry ($35USD).
One winner in each category and will receive one “The Works" Package to the 2027 conference, and accommodation upon request.

Te recordamos que tienes hasta el 15 de septiembre para participar en nuestros concursos anuales de escritura, que reconocen a escritores emergentes destacados. Los ganadores se anunciarán el 15 de noviembre.
El certamen ofrece dos modalidades: el Concurso Nacional de Cuento, Crónica y Poesía, gratuito y dirigido a residentes de la República Mexicana, y el Concurso Internacional de Cuento, para quienes viven fuera de México pero escriben en español, sin importar su nacionalidad. En esta modalidad se acepta una participación, con una cuota de US$35.
Habrá un ganador en cada categoría, quien recibirá un Paquete: La Obra Completa para asistir al Festival 2027, además de alojamiento, previa solicitud.

The Young Mexican Journalist Behind ‘the Spanish New Yorker’
José Luis Sabau grew up on Cozumel, a small island off Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Most people knew it only as a cruise ship stop. The local library was a single room in a museum, stocked mostly with books on tourism.
By 15, he’d started a news outlet that became the most followed in his state. By 21, he was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team of journalists.
Now he’s building Perpetuo, a magazine he describes as “the New Yorker for the Spanish-speaking world,” publishing dozens of new writers every month to tens of thousands of readers.

El joven periodista mexicano detrás del ‘New Yorker en español’
José Luis Sabau creció en Cozumel, una pequeña isla en la costa caribeña de México. La mayoría de la gente solo la conocía como una parada de cruceros. La biblioteca local era una sola habitación en un museo, abastecida principalmente con libros sobre turismo.
A los 15 años, fundó un medio de comunicación que se convirtió en el más seguido de su estado. A los 21, formó parte de un equipo de periodistas ganadores del Premio Pulitzer.
Ahora está construyendo Perpetuo, una revista que describe como “el New Yorker para el mundo hispanohablante”, publicando a docenas de nuevos escritores cada mes para decenas de miles de lectores.

‘Nona Rules’
Victoria Roberts is a San Miguel-based author, dramatist and, most famously, New Yorker magazine staff cartoonist since 1988. The artist, who grew up between Mexico, Australia and New York, will bring her new solo show “Nona Rules” to the Teatro Santa Ana in La Biblioteca Publica on July 9, 10 and 11. “This isn’t stand-up. It’s not storytelling. It’s an encounter,” she says.
