Splendido cookies top
the peanut butter field
|
Pardon our tardiness with the newsletter. We’re at once sugared-out and exhilarated by human contact, after our peanut butter cookie contest and “meet Shari Colson” open house Friday afternoon at your Chamber office.
Dozens attended our 2nd customer development event since the pandemic struck. We learned that, after a year of quiet time, we’re a little out of shape for networking, too!
Chamber Gold member El Conquistador Tucson, A Hilton Resort, Copper member Splendido at Rancho Vistoso, members The Country Club at La Cholla, the Gourmet Girls Gluten-Free Bakery and Bistro, and Oro Valley bakery Village Bakehouse baked up dozens of scrumptious cookies, and they were sampled and evaluated by the horde of guests.
They were all … delicious. The cookies, that is.
The best cookies, in the mouths of our audience, came from Splendido at Rancho Vistoso, a fabulous peanut butter cookie with peanuts, pretzels, Reese’s Pieces and chocolate chunks. To die for.
We’re grateful to all our bakers and guests. Remember, Saturday is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day. Shop local, Shop OV and Think OV First.
Oh, someone left their giant Hydro Flask with mask at our office. To claim, stop by 7435 No. Oracle, Suite 107, and tell the story of the stickers!

To save energy, cash,
reduce juice, 3-7 p.m.
|
It’s hot, and getting hotter. Desert dwellers like owls, javelinas, coyotes and jackrabbits know it’s best to lay low and conserve energy during the hottest period of the day.
Tucson Electric Power customers would do well to follow their lead. By avoiding energy use between 3 and 7 p.m. during the summer, you can help keep electric service reliable and affordable while making the most of TEP’s renewable energy resources.
Using less energy between 3 and 7 p.m. helps ease the pressure on TEP’s generating system, reducing its need for more expensive on-peak power, and reducing the threat of energy shortages, particularly during an extended Western heat wave, a release said.
When you shift the majority of your energy usage to mornings and early afternoons, a larger share of the energy you’re using for your dishwasher, washing machine and other appliances and electronics is coming from the sun. Likewise, evening energy use taps into TEP’s wind energy resources. And you can save money, too, by …
Running your dishwasher or washing machine before you turn in for the night.
Using ceiling fans to make the air feel cooler in the late afternoons rather than running the air conditioner.
Programming your pool pump to operate at midday instead of in the late afternoon.
Pre-cooling your home before 3 p.m. by setting the thermostat three degrees lower than your preferred setting at noon before peak begins and then adjusting your thermostat higher during peak hours.

Retired OVPD Chief Sharp running for mayor in 2022
|
Retired Oro Valley Police Chief Daniel Sharp will run for mayor of the Town of Oro Valley in 2022, he announced this week.
Chief Sharp, who led the OVPD for 20 years and is a past recipient of your Chamber’s Legacy Award, issued a statement expressing his belief that Oro Valley has been “the perfect place to live, work and play for people of all ages.” He and wife Lynn raised their family in Oro Valley.
“However, I am concerned about maintaining the quality of life we’ve come to know in Oro Valley,” Sharp writes. “Our community will be negatively affected if the businesses our residents support are not provided an environment to be successful. Their success provides the Town the ability to offer the services that maintain the quality of life we desire, as well as attract employment opportunities right here in our town.”
Sharp served nearly 18 months as interim town manager. “My record demonstrates my dedication to our success in achieving a safe, healthy and vibrant community,” he said.

Golder Ranch FD
accredited for its ambulance services
|
Chamber Copper member the Golder Ranch Fire District has been awarded accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services.
GRFD becomes the fourth agency accredited in the state of Arizona and the only fire district currently accredited, a release said. “This distinction assures patients that the service GRFD emergency medical personnel is providing meets the Commission’s high standard for quality patient care and ambulance transportation,” a release said.
“In light of the dynamic and tumultuous year that we all went through as a result of the pandemic, it’s a remarkable achievement for our organization. This is a monumental task during normal conditions but in the midst of a global pandemic, it took focus and dedication on the accreditation process; our staff deserves all of the credit,” said Emergency Medical Services Division Chief Grant Cesarek.
The CAAS process involved a yearlong effort on the part of GRFD staff to compile records demonstrating the quality of care, effectiveness of training, quality improvement process and community risk reduction. After initial review, a board spent 2 days interviewing staff, conducting station and vehicle inspections, and reviewing employee files and training records.
The accreditation is valid for a period of three years. At the end of the 3-year term; GRFD will participate in another review to renew accreditation.

Casa de la Luz Foundation transitions to Roots & Roads
|
The Casa de la Luz Foundation has transitioned to Roots & Roads Community Hospice Foundation, according to a June 1 press release.
The Casa de la Luz Foundation, established in 2000 by Agnes Ronstadt Poore and the late Lynette Jaramillo, founders of Chamber Copper member Casa de la Luz Hospice, supports struggling families with basic end-of-life needs. For more than 20 years, the Foundation has provided financial assistance, end-of-life education and research grant funding to enable individuals to die in comfort and with dignity.
The new name, Roots & Roads Community Hospice Foundation, was created to better distinguish the nonprofit as southeastern Arizona’s premiere hospice support and education organization.
“As our elderly population skyrockets over the next several years, the ned for hospice support will grow exponentially,” said Julie Evans, Roots & Roads executive director. “We are preparing to deepen our impact for those in our community who will be in need.”
The new name and logo, designed locally, evokes what many patients talk about at the end of life – where they came from (family roots), their journey thus far (labyrinth), and for where they believe they are going (roads).
“We knew that one day the Foundation would spread its wings and take flight,” said Agnes Poore, Casa de la Luz Hospice founder and CEO. “We are proud to see the Foundation expand its mission and continue the important work in support of all of our community’s hospice patients.”
Roots & Roads Community Hospice Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. The website is rootsandroads.org.
