BooksGuardian's Efforts Support Reading Opportunities
Spokane County United Way worked with Guardian Life Insurance, to provide area youth support through caring adults and literacy kits.

Guardian Life Insurance packaged over 800 books into literacy bags and handed them out to 283 students at Shiloh Hills Elementary School. Each student in K-3rd received 3 books, a book bag and a literacy game; each child chose their own books. This is a best practice because children who select their reading materials are more likely to read.

EcovaEcova's Blessing Bags Brings Our Community Together Around Homelessness

The Everybody Counts Campaign is an effort in the Spokane community to get a head count of the homeless population in our area in order to better assess their needs and address the crisis of homelessness.

To support this county-wide effort, Spokane County United Way coordinated a volunteer project with Ecova to assemble 240 Blessing Bags. Each bag contains warm socks, gloves, hand warmers, water, baby wipes and more. These supplies are handed out during the Everybody Counts Campaign on January 25th.

With a total of 42 volunteer hours, the value of the volunteers' hard work amounts to $1,262.
