The start of the new year brought an injection of new energy and interest into the Orange County women's sailing community. A well attended meeting took place in Dana Point in early January to brainstorm fresh new ideas for the Women's Ocean Racing Sailing Association (WORSA.)  Brenda Highley shared stories and photos of her trip to Tonga with the membership and long time members had the opportunity to meet new members, some brand new to sailing.  This year WORSA celebrates 35 years of supporting and educating women sailors and is being relaunched in 2015 with a fresh slate of officers and programs for the coming year. Follow us on Facebook or email us if you'd like to receive our newsletter to stay informed as we gear up for 2015.

Do you want to have a voice in how the new WORSA will look? Do you have ideas for interesting programs that will educate our members? Are you a skipper in search of crew or a crew in search of a skipper? Do you want to get to know other women who share your love for the ocean? If so, you must attend our February election meeting on Tuesday, February 10th at 7pm at Aventura. Attached is a list of available positions. Send an email by January 31st if you'd like to run for a position on the board. Nominations will also be taken from the floor at the February 10th meeting. You must be a member in good standing for 2015 in order to run for a board position or to vote.

The second part of our meeting will feature a recap of the highlights of the Women's Sailing Convention. Hear from WORSA members about racing clinics, anchoring, docking and the stories from women who have sailed all over the world.  You'll get the best parts of the Convention while enjoying wine and cheese with fellow members.

Good news! We can now securely accept your membership dues online with our Square account.

Skipper Lisa Doliva will be taking her Catalina 42 Izablue out for the Thursday night (Farkles) race this Thursday, January 22 and has invited any WORSA members who want to learn more about racing to join her. One of WORSA's goals as an organization is to use our shared love of sailing to give back to the community. Anchors Away Youth Services (AAYS) does just that. AAYS was started by our own WORSA club member KC Matlock 16 years ago. AAYS gives kids in the foster care system an opportunity to get out on boats and experience the ocean up close. For many, it's their first experience seeing whales or dolphins or even being on a boat. The annual AAYS April Regatta - to be held on April 19th - has become a cherished tradition but it requires a lot of volunteer support to make it a success. Bring a dish to share for the BBQ, skipper a boat full of kids for the regatta or bring your friendly dog down to play with the kids. Let's show the local community that WORSA is an organization that cares about giving back to the community. Please email Susie Campbell if you'd like to volunteer for this event.
