The Best Laid Plans Don't
Always Work
As most of you know, or might guess, I am old school. A former teacher, I still find it satisfying to lay out my week's work on a paper calendar, where I can can see the entire month, and the big picture, at a glance.
Usually it works very well. Usually.
And while I diligently filled every square in my calendar, time got away from me this year. Numerous driving trips to Colorado and back to train/place and check on one of my service dogs took time. Time well spent.
I also detoured to check in with Tim and his service dog that so many of you helped to train, Chiron. All is well, both are happy. Time well spent.
We added new classes at the center, and welcomed new students, both human and canine to try new things. Parkour, anyone? Time well spent.
As a breeder, I am always happy to welcome new pups, and I had great hopes for my Cavalier girl. And great heartache when two of the pups didn't survive. But I worried about Robert, the one remaining pup, being all by himself. And then fate stepped in and provided another Cavalier pup in need of nurturing. A roller coaster indeed, but time well spent.
Speaking of roller coasters, I anticipate life will carry on, with a series of ups and downs, and twists when I least expect them. But hopefully, I'm back on track with this newsletter and a more "normal" pace of daily life, whatever that may be. Talk soon.

Holiday Season: Be Treat Smart
As the holidays are just around the corner, it's the perfect time to offer a reminder about canines and candy. Simply put, they don't mix.
While most of us know that chocolate is bad for dogs, not everyone may know that artificial sweeteners should not be consumed by dogs. At best, they can cause gastrointestinal distress, at worst, some can be fatal.
According to the American Kennel Club, Xylitol is found in many “sugar-free” items for people, such as ice cream, candies, pastries, gum, peanut butter, yogurts, juices, and more. It is highly toxic and potentially fatal if consumed. Even in small doses, it can cause seizures, liver failure, and death.
Also potentially dangerous during the holidays are our seasonal decorations. Many (such as tinsel) can cause abdominal obstructions when consumed. Symptoms of an obstruction include vomiting (especially with undigested food present), lack of bowel movements, signs of pain (especially in the abdominal region), loss of interest in eating, and general apathy.
And just to be on the safe side, add this number to your cell. (You will need to have a credit card handy.)

Portia's Piece:
Hello, Charlotte!
While we're still missing Edie, and we always will, Little Miss Charlotte has been a ray of sunshine. Like me, Charlotte is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who believes she is a much bigger dog. I think it's her heart. She is black and tan, unofficially called a Cavalier, and she has a tail that won't quit. Easy to love, Charlotte loves to be held and cuddled, and Betsy thinks she can follow in my footsteps, making an excellent therapy dog. I tend to agree, some are born to it, and that seems to be the case with Charlotte. If you see her at the center, do say hello. She'd love that, and so would I.
Portia
P.S. I am only a LITTLE biased since Charlotte is my granddaughter!

November:
Adopt a Senior Pet Month
| |
As dog lovers, no doubt you saw the recent news story of the world's oldest dog crossing the rainbow bridge at age 31. What an extraordinarily long life!
Bobi is proof that senior dogs have much to offer, even as they are often overlooked in shelters and adoption agencies.
But senior dogs have much to recommend them. They have already passed the "terribles twos" and most are well house-trained. Their personalities are fully developed and you can see exactly what you'll be getting, in terms of both temperament and size.
Old dogs can surely learn new tricks. Time and time again, dogs have proven that they can learn at any age, and we welcome them with open arms at Redfern.
And lastly, the wet nose and desire to belong, to be loved, are exactly the same, regardless of age. Every dog deserves that.
