Peer Power: Bringing Advocacy Directly to the Community

Our newest program, Peer Power, has been making its way around Jeffco—to a coffee shop, an independent living community and soon, even more locations. As Consulting Advocate Brent Belisle put it: “We’re taking this show on the road!”

Peer Power is a consulting advocacy program, which means that at Peer Power events, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) receive support from advocates who also have IDD. Each event is held at a different location in the community, which is an important characteristic of the program, said Self-Advocacy Program Coordinator Helen Pietranczyk.

“We’re not asking people to come to us. We’re coming to you,” she explained.

Depending on the location, size of the group, and more, each iteration of Peer Power may look slightly different, but the main idea is always the same: Providing Q&A-based advocacy support from someone with lived experience.

It's National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

All October long, we invite you to join us in recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), which is all about celebrating the workforce achievements of people with disabilities.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” reminds us that the gifts and talents of people with disabilities lead to amazing contributions in workplaces across the nation. This observance also underscores the importance of including people with disabilities in each workplace.

So how can you celebrate NDEAM? A great place to start is by learning more about the real-life stories of employees with disabilities—including workers in our very own community!

  • In Ryan’s story, learn how Ryan persevered through a season of unemployment and landed a new job, where he’s now worked for more than a decade.
  • In Joan’s story, discover how Joan uses her unique skillset, including the ability to communicate in multiple languages, to excel in her job.
  • In Brent’s story, read how Brent has supported people with disabilities throughout his career, ultimately winning Advocate of the Year in 2025.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating NDEAM this year!

Changes Are Coming to Access-on-Demand

Starting next year, changes will be made to Access-on-Demand (AoD), RTD’s supplemental paratransit service for people with qualifying disabilities.

Through AoD, customers can book a ride through participating taxi or rideshare companies (like Uber and Lyft), and RTD will pay part of the cost for that ride, with certain limitations.

The RTD board voted last night to make changes to the program, saying that AoD has become unsustainably expensive to run. All changes will go into effect on January 1, 2026. Some of the program changes include:

  • A base fare of $4.50 will be charged to use this service. For LiVE eligible customers, the base fare will be $2.25.
  • RTD will subsidize up to $20/trip, which is less than the current subsidy of $25/trip.
  • AoD’s service area will include all locations within the RTD service area.
  • No waiting period will be required to start using AoD for customers who are certified as eligible.
  • Multi-stop trips will be allowed, with certain limitations.

October Celebrations & Observances

October is jam-packed with meaningful observances that recognize different parts of the disability community. Other observances this month promote safety for one and all, such as National Bullying Prevention Month and Digital Citizenship Week. Read on to learn how you can recognize these observances.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM): Oct 1-Oct 31

NDEAM celebrates the talents of workers with disabilities and advocates for greater inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace. See our article above to read the stories of workers with disabilities in our community! Learn more about NDEAM here.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month: Oct 1-Oct 31

This month is all about the diverse and valuable abilities, goals, and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. It also promotes advocacy and inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome. Learn more here.

Spina Bifida Awareness Month: Oct 1-Oct 31

Celebrate the contributions of people who have Spina Bifida, learn more about the disability, and advocate for the needs of the Spina Bifida community during Spina Bifida Awareness Month. Learn more here.

National Bullying Prevention Month: Oct 1-Oct 31

Research shows that millions of children are bullied each year, and children with disabilities are more likely to be bullied than their nondisabled peers. Every October, National Bullying Prevention Month is observed to help combat these critical issues. Learn more about preventing bullying here.

Italian American Heritage Month: Oct 1-Oct 31

Alongside celebrating the contributions of all Italian Americans, this month is a chance to learn more about changemaking Italian Americans with disabilities. Click here to read about Italian American disability advocates and their contributions.

Anniversary of Rosa’s Law: Oct 5

World Cerebral Palsy Day: Oct 6

On World Cerebral Palsy Day, we recognize the successes of people with Cerebral Palsy (CP). This month is also about understanding the need for increased acceptance and inclusion of people with CP. Learn more here.

World Mental Health Day: Oct 10

Among other goals, World Mental Health Day encourages all to take steps to improve their mental health. According to the CDC, people with disabilities are at an even greater risk of experiencing frequent mental distress than their peers, making this day so important for our community. Learn more about World Mental Health Day.

Digital Citizenship Week: Oct 20-Oct 24

During this week, take a moment to consider how you can be safe and responsible online. The Green Mountain Self-Advocates have created two helpful tools to help you make sure you are making safe decisions while using the internet: “Dealing with Scams and Abuse” and “Dating on the Internet.”
