School is in Session
Time to get busy creating success stories!
With school back in session, students are settling in to their academic studies, getting serious about squash, exploring STEM career options and, finding ways to give back to the community!
Northrop Grumman STEM Field Trip
In early October, several AYA students attended Northrop Grumman’s Operations Week 2019 youth engagement activities. The purpose of the visit was to bring in a group of students to the Spectrum Center facility to participate in STEM-focused activities that highlight the importance of cross-functional collaboration, diversity of thought, and using innovation to achieve a common goal. The visit included a tour of the manufacturing floor, seeing a FABLAB in action, hearing from a career panel, and competing in a mystery box activity. The visit allowed the students to see the array of possible careers available in the STEM field, particularly those within Northrop Grumman.
2019 Coastal Cleanup Day
Last month, over 20 Access students participated in the 35th annual Coastal Cleanup Day! We joined over 6,500 other volunteers at 107 sites around the region, removing over 140,000 pounds of debris. The day’s environmental protection effort prevented the equivalent of 5,500 garbage trucks emptying their contents into the ocean! It was a beautiful day to be by the water, cleaning up our lovely beaches.
Harrow’s San Diego Junior Silver
at SD Squash Club
With the help of a sponsorship from Harrow Sports , Access Youth Academy hosted a Junior Silver Tournament with nine divisions in early October at SD Squash Club. Access had 16 players in the event and many of our older students played in 2 divisions. Overall, the Harrow Tournament was a great success! Whether the individual outcome was gaining experience playing in tournaments or gathering the much-needed points required to boost rankings and ratings, all the Access students showed up and gave it their best! Each match played offers Access students an insight into skills which need improving. And each part of the process, from practice to tournament and back to practice again, instills in the youth an understanding of the time, dedication and hard work it takes to achieve success. Under the guidance of Coach Dave, Access Youth Academy players are showing continuous improvement in their skill sets and gaining momentum towards their goals of college recruitment in the years to come.
Many thanks to the Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation for your support of Access Youth Academy students. It is because of generous donors like you that Access youth are able to achieve the incredible successes they do.
The Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation is driven by the idea that every child holds promise and every child should have opportunity for success. We believe that investment in youth is fundamental to future cultural and economic prosperity.
