Greetings!

We frequently talk about the partnership we have with our families, as we work together to nurture and challenge all of our students. During these times, we want to be sure you know we are still here for you. Even though we do not physically see our students and families each day, we are here to help in any way we can.

This week's Pinwheel is all about ways we can help. We are excited to introduce four new, complimentary offerings – in addition to services we already have in place – to support you and your family during this pandemic:

  • New Learning Support Services: Even if you have not worked with Learning Support Services (LSS) in the past, both our LSS team members are available to any of our families this spring.
  • New School Counseling Sessions: This spring, we have also temporarily hired a licensed school counselor, Robin Smelzer, who will offer sessions to any of our students and their families.
  • New Parent Coaching Sessions: Certified parent coach, Joyce Ann Starks will be offering three coaching sessions focused on direct, action-based techniques to remedy specific challenges. She will also be available for one-on-one coaching sessions related to her presentation topics.
  • New Parent Seminar on Resiliency: Center for Creative Leadership senior faculty member, Jessica Glazer, will offer an evening conversation on Thursday, April 30 about resiliency and how this attribute can serve us during challenging times.
  • Video Check-Ins with Faculty: Your weekly Video Check-Ins remain a great way to partner with your child’s teacher. Faculty are available to offer second Video Check-Ins or individualized lessons when needed.
  • Support from Administration: Our directors are working remotely and are available to you as usual. Additionally, if you are experiencing a financial hardship due to COVID-19 that threatens your continued enrollment at our School, please reach out to me personally. We want to help.

Keep reading for specifics about our new services, and please take advantage of any and all of the offerings that might be of help to your child and your family. If you aren’t sure where to start, let me know, and we can think about it together.
Dr. Kevin Navarro
Head of School

Learning Support Services
We are fortunate to have such a strong Learning Support Services (LSS) team at our School. LSS partners with classroom teachers and families to support children with learning or developmental profiles, coordinate standardized and diagnostics tests, do one-on-one interventions, and serve as a “gatekeeper” to help families partner with any needed outside services. In this world of remote learning, sometimes you might not know what you need to support your child, but a phone call or Video Check-In with one of our LSS team members might help bring clarity to a situation. Even if you have not used LSS in the past, both Sidney McGinnis and JoAnn Currie are available to any of our families and would welcome a conversation with you. While Sidney works with students of all ages, she specializes in supporting kindergarten students and older. JoAnn specializes in early childhood development in Toddler and Primary.
School Counseling Sessions
We have temporarily hired a licensed school counselor to offer counseling sessions to any of our students and their families. We are fortunate Robin Smelzer, a long-time Greensboro Montessori School parent, and part-time counselor at another local independent school, has joined our team for the spring. Robin can provide phone or video school counseling sessions that work with your schedule, be it just one session or several sessions. She will typically first gather information from a parent, then talk with a student, and then report back to the parent. Robin reports to the head of school, Kevin Navarro, and the content of all sessions remain confidential. There is no charge for sessions with Robin. Just contact her directly at schoolcounselor@gms.org to arrange a time that works for you.
Parent Coaching Sessions
Joyce Ann Starks received her parent educator certification from the International Network of Children and Families (INCAF) in 2002. She teaches classes based on the principles of Redirecting Children’s Behavior (RCB) and Positive Discipline. Joyce Ann will host three parent coaching sessions for our community in the coming weeks. Each session will feature time for questions and answers, with optional open chat time following each session. Joyce Ann will also offer 30-minute follow-up telephone calls with attendees who would like coaching related specifically to their family.
Register for any or all of these engaging refreshers for highly effective, easy-to-overlook skills for guiding, shaping, and redirecting a child’s behavior ... on the spot.
