April Regular Meeting Will Feature Visiting Team From National and New OWL Video |
|
April is here and that means business to conduct at our next member meeting on Wednesday the 13th. Lunch will be at the Pacific Club (please see details in this newsletter).
There will be a special presentation from the visiting team from our National Organization. They will be on Zoom and show a short program and be available to answer questions. If time permits, we are also hoping to give everyone a sneak peek at the Operation Wildlife video that Betty Parinas, Myrtle Ching-Rappa and Hazel Sumile worked so diligently on this past year.
This meeting is where membership approves the Slate of Candidates for the Board 2022 - 2023. We also will be giving you a brief overview of the budgets for next fiscal year.
We will have another strong board for next year but need to add a secretary to make the board complete. Please think about helping us in this regard. Meeting attendance monthly, familiarity with Microsoft Word and a can-do attitude is all that is needed. Plenty of training and assistance will be available so don’t shy away from this important position.
Strategic Planning meetings were held on March 9 with a record number of members who contributed thoughtful ideas and suggestions on the future of Assistance League of Hawaii. We appreciate and give a shout out to the hosts who volunteered to have their homes for the meetings.

You're invited to our Regular Member Meeting on Wednesday, April 13. Here are the essential details:
Location: Pacific Club, 1451 Queen Emma St, Honolulu
The meeting will start at 10:30 am. Doors will open at 10.
Lunch at 12 noon. Selection for lunch ($35) options:
1. Chicken Caesar salad
2. Pacific Club Wrap in tomato tortilla, with side salad
Vegetarian chefs choice available upon request.
We have a packed agenda that will include the vote on slate of board candidates, introduction of next year’s budget, a 15 minute live presentation via Zoom with our National visitation team, a sneak peak at our renewed OWL video and biofacts, our strategic plan summary and time to enjoy each other in person!
Please RSVP to althrift281@gmail.com with your luncheon selection by April 5th at 12 noon. Think about including that friend who might enjoy a lunch out and perhaps be interested in joining our chapter to continue our pursuit of community programs for keiki and needy families.

A special Mahalo to all our members who participated in our in-person evaluation meetings on March 9th. We had 47 members participate and contribute valuable ideas and suggestions for the future success of Assistance League Hawaii.
An evaluation summary will be distributed and discussed at our April 13th meeting at The Pacific Club.

Aloha For Hawaii Charities Sum +
Last Chance for Change For Change

On March 8, 2022, the Resource Development Committee received the final accounting for the Aloha for Hawaii Charities donations that ended in January. A big mahalo to all who participated and a "special shout out" to Cathy Kissel for her substantial contribution. The total sum for this campaign is $1165.00. The Assistance League of Hawaii program, including the Kokua Boxes, receives these donations to serve our Hawaii Keiki.
The Change for Change (C4C) for "YO!" (Youth Outreach) is well underway. Remember the last date is approaching, April 15, 2022. We are very close to our goal to provide funds for our youth's summer needs. You can return your C4C bank at our monthly luncheon meeting on April 13, 2022 or bring it to the Thrift Shop. You can also contact Joan or Carol to make arrangements. As of the week of March 21, the total contribution now stands at $632.08. Mahalo to all who have participated in the C4C for YO!

New Budget Up For Approval |
|
The Finance Committee prepared the 2022-2023 Budget. If approved by the Board of Directors, it will be presented to the membership at the April 13, 2022 meeting, requiring one month's time for review. It will be voted upon at the May 11, 2022 meeting.
All Committees shared information in the development of the budget.
A sub-committee is continuing to develop a conservative plan to invest surplusAssistance League of Hawaii savings funds in order to gain a more positive return.We are working with Bonnie Rice of The Rice Partnership in Honolulu, to transfer these funds to Treasury Money Market Funds.We appreciate Betty Burrell's assistance in this effort. Membership will have the opportunity to approve any investment actions before they are finalized.

OWL Takes Flight at Schools |
|
The first presentation of our new Operation Wildlife video was held at Pu'uhale Elementary School on March 7, to 38 fourth graders. The students enjoyed the video and thought they learned a lot from it. Some students had questions afterward that were answered at the end of the hour.
Member volunteers Mary Monohon, Carol Jones, Linda Tsark, Betty Parinas, Linda Andersen, Leilani Alcover and Hazel Sumile shared the biofacts with the students after the video and the kids certainly were engaged with all of it, even though it was still a “no touch” event.
We will be visiting a total of 9 schools over the next several weeks and are looking forward to sharing with more students and teachers!

Kokua Clothing Boxes and Other Essential Items Help People in Need |

With many of the COVID-19 protocols behind us, our philanthropic programs kicked into higher gears this year. The latest update includes:
Operation School Bell®
Assistance League of Hawaii would like to thank all who have participated in our new Kokua Clothing Boxes project. We couldn’t have gotten this project off the ground without the help of our members ordering clothing, packing boxes and delivering the packed boxes to schools on Oahu and the Neighbor Islands.
Next year, with our new increased budget, we’ll be able to add additional schools and help even more students. We will need someone to head up this Kokua Clothing Boxes project for the coming year, and we will need even more help from our members with packing and delivering boxes.

We Care
On March 11, Linda Tsark delivered goods valued at $1,896 to Youth Outreach in Waikiki. Items delivered included underwear, shorts, tents, tarps, power banks, toiletries, diapers, hydro flasks, milk and Walmart gift cards. Youth Outreach (YO!) benefits youth living on the streets.
Paula Allen delivered diapers in several sizes, Pull-Ups, and laundry products, valued at $621, to Domestic Violence Action Center, benefiting women and children escaping abusive situations.

Membership Dues Due May 31 |
|
You are invited to continue your membership in Assistance League of Hawaii for the 2022-2023 fiscal year by paying your yearly dues of $70 by May 31. Voting and Non-voting Members pay the same amount. Checks can be made out to "Assistance League of Hawaii" and mailed to: Assistance League of Hawaii / 1505 Young Street / Honolulu, HI 96826 / Attention: Treasurer.
If you prefer, you can bring your dues to the April 13 or May 11 Regular Meeting or drop off your dues at the Thrift Shop for the Treasurer.

Generous Thrift Shop Donations;
COVID Restrictions Ending
|

March has been a terrific month for generous donations but hectic for our regular workers. Thanks to all of you who have helped. Our “snowbirds” will be leaving, and that will be a big void as they always worked so hard. Thank you, Jan Reiter, Patti Schulz and Diann King.
With COVID-19 restrictions ending, we have decided to let individual workers and customers decide for themselves in regards to wearing a mask. We will see how it goes. Things could change, we adjust.
Our fiscal year is soon ending. Many things about the property and homeless continue to be a major concern of the Thrift Shop Committee. We are always glad to have your suggestions, etc.
