Once in a great while, my quick Facebook scrolling kicks out something that stops to make me think.
A good rant always gets my attention and when it's in my industry, I feel obligated to take a look. We all know, everyone is too busy out there every day, bombarded with emails, calls, and texts. Agents have it coming at them 24/7. We also know how angry we get when we're trying to get through to someone in control of a listing but they're too busy to take our call.
This is where listing agents are challenged. Can they serve their Seller, put together the deal, and still be reasonable to work with when those pesky agents keep calling them day and night?
But we need to understand, those pesky agents are only trying to do their job and look out for their own clients. By the way, if you don't know, being a Buyer's agent can be a tough gig.
It reminded me of the Great Recession of 2007 - 2009, when the real estate industry was all about short sales and REOs (foreclosed properties). Listing agents handling REOs were overloaded and nearly impossible for them to answer all their calls. Buyer's agents trying to call them or get an email reply were frustrated out of their minds as they were completely ignored.

Part II Continued from above...
Our little group at Results Commercial, 2.5 - 3 of us back then, managed up to 70 REO and standard commercial listings at any given time. Our work never stopped. Demanding asset managers, rude investors, and the occasional arrogant residential agent who didn't understand CRE REOs, didn't make things any easier.
Every file had issues and problems - the work was hard, relentless and sometimes dangerous. Juggling calls, emails and texts, day and night, while having a family and trying to keep our nose above water was no fun whatsoever. Yet, most of us were just grateful to stay in the business!
Through those dark days, I had to coach myself, "Mark, this is a people business! The person you treat rotten and blow-off today, will happily do the same to you tomorrow."
Everyday I had to remind myself, despite burn-out, frustration, and difficult individuals, this is a people business and everyone deserves respect. Their question might be dumb to me, but it's important to them. Their investor client might totally bug me, but the agent is simply doing their job.

Part III Continued from above...
I don't care if you're an accountant, barrister, or auto mechanic, we're in the people business. There is not one among us who is more important than another. The Golden Rule applies in business just as much as it does in life.
Listen, it is people that make our business function. It is people that get the work done. It is people that make us laugh and glad we showed up today. It is the people we work with who bring us joy.
If we're too busy to care about the other guy, we've got a problem. If we're too busy to reply back, we need to fix our problem. If we're too busy to treat people decently who did us no wrong, we have a really big problem staring back at us in the mirror.
Agents and brokers can't be only transactional, only about the terms, only about commissions, and only about ourselves. When we don't care about people anymore, we don't belong in the business.
One day soon, AI and bots may make real estate agents insignificant and obsolete. But before they rule our world, let's show how human intelligence with a little empathy can make our business better.
