January - June 2022 Progress Report
|
|
In the first half of 2022, HomeAid Atlanta provided a savings of over $150,000 in construction costs for organizations serving people experiencing homelessness, completed eight HomeAid Care Days, engaged volunteers in over 1,000 hours of service, and much more. And we're nowhere near finished! Along with continuing projects, more Care Days and CareKits, this October, we will begin a project in Canton to add an additional 35 beds for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Caring for Families at Solomon's Temple
|
|
On July 21, Juneau Construction Company summer interns joined a HomeAid Care Day at Solomon’s Temple Foundation, an emergency and transitional home for women and children experiencing homelessness. The hardworking interns tackled indoor and outdoor tasks around the facility: deep cleaning, landscaping, storage closet organization, furniture assembly, and more.
Thanks to the hard work of Juneau volunteers and donations of materials, this HomeAid Care Day provided a savings of over $5,200 for Solomon’s Temple. This money-saving support allows Solomon’s Temple to focus less on building maintenance, and more on providing care and programs for the families it serves. This was HomeAid’s ninth Care Day of 2022, and our seventh Care Day at Solomon’s Temple since 2015.
Juneau Construction Company encourages and supports participation in service activities that contribute to the community. Over the years, in addition to participating in four HomeAid Care Days, Juneau has supported HomeAid's Essentials Drive, as well as provided construction assistance with HomeAid's 2018 renovation at Atlanta Center for Self-Sufficiency.

Who HomeAid Helps:
Solomon's Temple
Since 2015, HomeAid Atlanta volunteers have participated in seven HomeAid Care Days at Solomon’s Temple. HomeAid Care Days have saved Solomon’s Temple over $90,000 on maintenance and repair projects thanks to the hard work of volunteers and donations of building materials. This savings allows Solomon’s Temple to spend less on facility maintenance and invest more in the families they serve.
Living in a homeless shelter, especially as a child, is never easy, but having a safe and stable environment like Solomon’s Temple has made a positive impact for residents Doni and her five-year-old son, Zamonie.
When Zamonie, who was diagnosed with autism at age two, arrived at Solomon’s Temple, he was very shy, and never made eye contact with others. Doni thought that the large number of families living in the shelter would overwhelm him, but after regular interaction with Solomon’s Temple staff and other residents, Zamonie has made progress. He has begun smiling, following verbal commands, fist bumping, and verbalizing. He has become very inquisitive, loves the outdoors, and he has an exceptional understanding of computers. Doni is thrilled about her son’s progress, thanks to the loving, family environment provided at Solomon’s Temple.

HomeAid CareKits are hygiene kits packed by volunteers and distributed to people in need by local providers of homeless services. This summer, two organizations collaborated with HomeAid to provide 500 CareKits for Another Chance Atlanta.
In late spring, Rockhaven Homes employees like Kristen Dentler (above, right) collected feminine hygiene products and other supplies for CareKits. Feminine hygiene products are very expensive but integral to women's health, and often not readily available for women experiencing homelessness. In addition to these donations, generous Rockhaven employees raised over $1,100 to purchase additional CareKits items!
Throughout July, volunteers from Stacey's Place, Inc. (above, left) have packed 500 CareKits using supplies from Rockhaven Homes’ donation drives. Stacey's Place serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families by providing respite care, residential living and a day program so they can grow towards more independent and fulfilling lives.
On July 29, the 500 CareKits will be delivered to Another Chance Atlanta, which provides housing and support to homeless veterans, families, and individuals via temporary housing, permanent housing, and case management. HomeAid Atlanta thanks Rockhaven Homes and Stacey’s Place for their partnership in caring for our metro Atlanta neighbors in need.
