Tearing Down Walls in Midtown
“The Care Day volunteers did an amazing job working together in tough, dusty conditions. It was a fun and safe day of demolition. The work we did saved HomeAid critical funds that are needed towards accomplishing the end result of the house for its future residents. I hope all volunteers had a good day donating their time to such a great cause, and hope to see you again in the trenches!”
- Bruce Carothers, Division Manager, Starlight Homes Georgia.

HomeAid Atlanta held its first 2023 Care Day on February 10. Volunteers from Ashton Woods, Starlight Homes, SouthState Bank, Kennesaw State University National Association of Home Builders Student Chapter (KSU NAHB), and Vincent Longo Custom Builders joined forces at the site of the Ascensa Health Women’s Recovery Residence in Midtown. Their hard work provided a savings of $13,000 on demolition services to kick off a HomeAid Atlanta remodel project at the site.

“Before I came to Ascensa Health, I was homeless and staying in a shelter. At first, I didn’t want to go to treatment. After realizing that I had mental health issues that I had never dealt with that were causing me to use drugs, I decided to go to treatment again for the fourth time. I have never been to treatment like Ascensa Health. They are supportive and helpful without judgement. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it is the best decision I’ve ever made.” -former Ascensa Health resident
Hall Design Build and the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association Remodelers Council are partnering with HomeAid Atlanta to remodel the Ascensa Health Women’s Recovery Residence. The work will provide much-needed updates to the kitchen and bathrooms, as well as a new laundry space and general improvements throughout. When complete, the house will be home to 8 to 10 women. We are proud to be able to support the transformative work happening at Ascensa Health.

HomeAid & Affordable Housing
In addition to the remodel project with GHC (see above), HomeAid continues to work with Leadership Atlanta and various municipalities on ways to contribute to affordable housing throughout metro Atlanta.
On January 26, we attended a meeting of the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Faith-Based Development Initiative. There, HomeAid Atlanta Executive Director Mandy Crater and Board President Tony Albachiara (top photo) presented HomeAid's history and potential to be involved in this Atlanta effort to provide affordable housing in partnership with faith-based organizations that own underutilized land and facilities in the city. We connected with Providence Missionary Baptist Church and Veterans Empowerment Organization, two organizations with which future HomeAid projects are possible.
The Mayor’s Faith-Based Development Initiative was launched to build a pipeline of community-based organizations that can fully leverage existing development incentives and other resources to produce permanently affordable housing units across Atlanta. This initiative should spur the creation of at least 2000 units of affordable housing over the next eight years as part of the administration's 20,000 unit goal.
