Reminder: You Can Help Create a
Murder Mystery This Saturday
We have a few seats available for this weekend's Candlestick in the Library program, so sign up and be part of the audience that will participate in the improvisational making of a murder mystery.

On Sat., Jan. 15 at 1:00 p.m. we'll present an afternoon of murder, mystery, mayhem and fun led by Jeannette de Beauvoir, author of the Sydney Riley Provincetown mystery series. Participants will help supply the victim(s), sidekick, murderer and more, eventually putting the entire story together.
In less than 80 minutes, you’ll have created a (semi)-coherent story to rival Agatha Christie—but having a lot more fun than Agatha ever did!

This program is generously supported by the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library, and is free to attend. Registration is required due to COVID-19 restrictions and seating is limited. Call 508/946-2470 or email Reference/Adult Services Librarian Libby Fox.

A Valentine's Day Cracker for Your Sweetheart

Adults ages 18+ can reserve a take-and-make craft kit starting today and pick it up at the Library between Mon., Jan. 31 and Mon., Feb 14. Each kit contains everything you need to make a Valentine's Day surprise for your sweetie, although contents may vary from the photo shown here.

Middleboro's Top 10 Reads for Adults in 2021

Curious about what we were all reading this past year? Take a look at the top 10 books checked out at the Middleboro Public Library during 2021. (This ranking includes all print copies of each title: hard cover, paperback and large print.)

The only repeat authors from 2020 were (to exactly no one's surprise...) James Patterson and John Grisham, although both had two books in the top 10 last year, and just one this year.

  1. The Four Winds, by Kristin Hannah
  2. A Gambling Man, by David Baldacci
  3. Eternal, by Lisa Scottoline
  4. Sooley, by John Grisham
  5. Hour of the Witch, by Chris Bohjalian
  6. The Wife Upstairs, by Rachel Hawkins
  7. Dark Sky, by C.J. Box
  8. We Begin at the End, by Chris Whitaker
  9. 21st Birthday, by James Patterson
  10. Golden Girl, by Elin Hilderbrand

We have copies of all these popular titles in both our print and digital collections, so stop by sometime to see what all the fuss was about. You can also place a copy on hold any time by clicking on the book title above, or by visiting OverDrive for an e-copy.

"Book Blurbs" -- What We've Been Reading/Watching
Periodically, we bring you a brief Book Blurb from the staff about what we've been reading/watching/playing.

First up this week, a recommendation from Library Technician Stephanie Nelson. Scary Stories for Young Foxes, by Christian McKay Heidicker. Stephanie writes, "When the darkness falls (and perhaps even as the snow falls), curl up in a pile of blankets with this book in hand and pretend you are in a fox den. It brings you on an interesting and sometimes gruesome journey through the perils of being a fox pup. It's a story of survival and unexpected relationships, that also includes a dark twist on a certain beloved children's author.

Geared for middle school-aged kids and up, but even adults will enjoy."

Next, a recommendation from Head of Technical Services Lori Salotto who recently finished watching the first season of Wheel of Time, based on the beloved book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

Lori notes, "Amazon wanted its own Game of Thrones mega hit so they took Jordan's 14-book series and turned it into a TV series. I haven't read the books yet, and those who have may have issues with how things are portrayed in the new show, but for someone new to Jordan's world, I very much enjoyed the program."
