Changing the World, One Book at a Time
  Reader to Reader Newsletter
May 2020

Dear Friends,

I'm so pleased at all the hard work our staff is doing to keep our work going strong. Out west, our staff is working by email with students living on the Navajo Nation, helping them complete college applications and giving them much needed support as they complete schoolwork so they can graduate. They are also keeping students engaged in reading by collecting their book requests so we can ship books straight to their homes.

Sadly, the Navajo Nation has the highest per capita number of COVID-19 cases, higher than even New York, and we are finding ways to contribute to the relief effort. Our wonderful volunteer Ann Greene is making face masks, and we managed to locate 4 gallons of hand sanitizer and 1,500 gloves that are now on their way to the Navajo Nation Library in Window Rock, Arizona. The library is scheduled to reopen the second week of June, and we want to help them do it safely.

Our work goes on, and we would be grateful if you continue to support it with a donation of any size.

Best,

David Mazor

Students Get Books to Read at Home

"Thank you for the book you sent me, I really appreciate it. I'm reading it and it is so informative!" --Calista

Our Navajo Outreach Coordinators: Martha, Jinaabah, Kyle, and Ronda, have been sending books directly to their students' homes. The students have responded enthusiastically.

The donations are based on their requests, and their interests are diverse. Some of the books they are excited to read include: Code Talker, The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni, This Mortal Coil, The Beautiful and Damned, Small Sacrifices, and we even have a student tackling Korean for Beginners. Especially popular is Medicine Women : The Story of the First Native American Nursing School by Jim Kristofic.

We are excited that even with the schools closed, we are able to fuel the passion for reading.

Drop-Off Donations on Hold

Sadly, f or now, we are unable to take in book donations at our office at Amherst College, as the campus is closed. We hope to be able to restart accepting drop-off donations in the fall. We thank you for your patience.

We miss seeing you!
Ghana Project Builds Community Library

Books Arrive in the Ghana

Books from Reader to Reader have arrived in Ghana to help fill the shelves of a new community center in Accra.

The project is the brainchild of Hampshire College professor Rachel Engmann, who is doing a decade-long archeological dig as the director of the Christiansborg Archaeological Heritage Project.
