NFFC at #Nyéléni2025

NFFC is honored to participate in the 3rd Nyéléni Forum, taking place this week in Sri Lanka! Nyéléni is a grassroots organizing space, dating to 2007, committed to championing food sovereignty and agroecology, and creating unified principles that support a fairer global food system. The Forum offers a important space to build solidarity, and will allow for the cross-sectional discussions needed to tackle many global challenges while centering human rights and democratic control.

Our delegates include members and staff from Family Farm Defenders, the North American Marine Alliance, Rural Vermont, the Northeast Organic Farming Association, and the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund. NFFC's Programs and Policy Director, Jordan Treakle, is also attending as a member of the Global Steering Committee.

Our delegates are sending news from the forum, like this interview from Nyéléni Radio with Feini Yin and Melanie Brown (NAMA)! Keep an eye on our Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky accounts for more updates from the Forum, and make sure to also check out the official Nyéléni Forum website. We'll also follow up in our September newsletter later this month!

Standing Against Free Trade Agreements

September 10 is commemorated by La Via Campesina and its allies worldwide as the International Day of Action Against the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). On this day, we remember the sacrifice of South Korean peasant Lee Kyung Hae in Cancun in 2003, when he took his life to protest the WTO-led free trade policies.

Free-market globalization has only created immense suffering for our people and the whole of humanity. Together, we will continue to fight to dismantle oppressive neoliberal institutions, defend the peasantry and rural communities, and protect our food sovereignty and biodiversity! Read NFFC's joint statement with fellow organizations in the US and Canada from 2024, calling for a new trade framework.

You can participate! Organize events, rallies, and public awareness campaigns to help press for alternative trade policies that prioritize solidarity, internationalism, social justice, food sovereignty, and environmental justice.
