I WAS JUST THINKING
Artist of Dallas King statue Walter Winn Jr. deserves our memory - Part I
|
By Norma Adams-Wade
The late, unassuming Dallas artist and jazz drummer Walter Winn Jr. popped into my mind recently. I wish his name were more remembered. It certainly deserves to be. I had many conversations with Walter while he lived and considered him a friend. I would like to think – but know better — that everyone knows he created the 7-1/2-ft bronze statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that stands today in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center at 2922 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. in South Dallas.

KICKIN' IT WITH KENDALL GAYLE
Seniors, we are almost there!

Attention all seniors: this is a year you will never forget. If there is something that you have always wanted to do, it’s your last year so go for it because if you don’t, you will regret it. Go to all the games and school dances, because it is your last chance to do so.
Dear Class of 2023,
We have almost made it. May 2023 will be here before we know it. Our freshman year was cut short, by what we thought was going to be a two-week break. Instead it turned into a global pandemic. Staying at home gave us the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and grow. Most, if not everyone, came back to school the following year their true authentic selves.

Then 98-year-old George Dawson learned to read at the Lincoln Instructional Center in South Dallas. For 20 years, it wasn't much of a problem that Dawson's autobiography could be studied by students at George Dawson Middle School in Southlake. But the local school board became highly politicized, and everything changed.

They named a school after him, and now they’re not sure if students should read his book
George Dawson Middle School in Southlake’s Carroll ISD is named after the grandson of an ex-slave.
|
You name a new school building after a man or woman, and decades later few remember who that person was. In the case of the late George Dawson of Dallas — he of George Dawson Middle School fame in Southlake’s Carroll ISD — the reason his name is on a school is something of a miracle.

On the historic day of the 67th anniversary of Till’s murder, We Demand Justice.
On August 28th, 1955, Emmett Louis Till, a 14-year-old boy, was kidnapped from his bed, dragged across Mississippi, brutally tortured, and lynched. His body was then dumped in the Tallahatchie River, mutilated. Nine days later, his mother, Mamie Till, would bury him following an open casket funeral that would shake a nation.
However, despite the brutality of the crime, the murders Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam were acquitted by an all-white jury in the south of Money, Mississippi. Carolyn Bryant, the woman who incited the kidnapping and lynching of Emmett would not even face trial. She was never even served with the filed arrest warrant.
Youth Never Let Up Coalition, led by Generation Z leaders representing multiple organizations from across the Nation such as: The NAACP, National Action Network, Warriors in the Garden, Next Gen Come Up, Minnesota Teen Activists, and Protect Us will convene for a mass mobilization of intergenerational peoples demanding for #JusticeforEmmettTill. On the 67th anniversary of the death of Emmett Till, the nation will be reminded that Black Lives Matter in a mass march beginning at Times Square New York.

New NYCHA survey available in Creole, aims to prioritize residents’ concerns

The Haitian Times
By Leonardo March
BROOKLYN—The New York City comptroller’s office has released a new survey, available in Haitian Creole, that aims to understand the concerns of public housing residents. “We're just asking people: ‘What is it that you think we should dig in on, we'll come back to you as we have findings on those things you ask us for,’” said NYC Comptroller Brad Lander. “So we have the survey translated into a number of languages, including Haitian Creole.”

The Path
As we walk through life's journey, we leave footprints. Some just show where we are going. Others redirect us when we get lost. Still others remain to guide those we leave behind. I see your footprints.
Will you/they see mine?
