June Maintenance Guidelines
  • Plant container, ball & burlap (B&B) trees, shrubs and perennials!  Don't forget to use Marcum's Redbud Compost with root stimulator for best results.
  • Mulch around your plants to aid in moisture control as summer quickly approaches.
  • For preventative white grub treatments, apply Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone II in late June to mid-July.
  • See Marcum's watering guidelines for new and established trees.
  • Apply SEDGEHAMMER Turf Herbicide to eliminate yellow and purple nutsedge.
  • Post-emergent control of crabgrass and summer annual grasses is best performed on young plants using ferti-lome's Weed Out with Q. This product kills Crabgrass, Dandelion, Clover, plus 200 other listed weeds.
  • Meet water requirements of turf.
  • Seeding of warm-season grasses should be completed by the end of June to reduce winter kill losses.
  • Fertilize warm season grasses using Marcum's Slow Release 18-6-12 Fertilizer or our 31-0-0 for faster results.
  • Watch for signs of spider mites. Foliage may become pale and speckled; juniper foliage turns a pale yellowish color. Shake a branch over white paper and watch for tiny specks that crawl.
  • Apply Natural Guard Spinosad or Natural Guard Catepillar Killer Spray with BT for early sightings of bag worms and tent catepillars. Hi-Yield 38 Plus or Hi-Yield Malathion are recommended if heavy infestations have formed.
  • Dollar spot disease can first become visible on lawns in mid-May. Apply ferti-lome Liquid Systemic Fungicide or ferti-lome F-Stop. Make sure fertilizer applications have been adequately applied before applying a fungicide.
  • Seed warm-season grasses (Bermuda and Zoysia) in mid-May through the end of June.
  • Set out your annual bedding plants for summer color.
  • Remove all dead branches on established trees.

Pressed Flower Bouquet

You'll need:
flowers and leaves from your garden
a flower press or heavy book
cardboard or newspaper
heavy weight

Instructions:
  1. Collect plant material. It's best to collect plants for pressing when they are free of dew or rain. Select relatively small, flat flowers, as they tend to press better than bulky ones.
  2. Place materials in your plant press or an old phone books or catalog.
  3. Children should carefully lay each specimen in between a folded sheet or two of newspaper (or blotter paper, sandwiched in between newspaper). You can lay numerous flowers or plants of the same thickness on the same piece of paper, as long as they don't touch.
  4. Make the sandwich. In between each plant/paper layer, insert a piece of corrugated cardboard. Next, you'll need to bind or weight the stack to create pressure that will help the plants dry. You can tighten straps or belts around it or simply put something heavy on the stack. Leave your press in a warm, ventilated location.
  5. Check your specimens. Although many plants will dry adequately in ten days to two weeks, some may take longer. If you find they are still moist when you check them, and you have them between more than one newspaper layer, you can change just the outer layer. (The delicate plants, when moist, will likely stick to the piece they're touching.)
