Webinar series currently underway
Our five-part educational webinar series on access to medications began earlier this month. With new advances in the management and treatment of bladder cancer on the horizon, it’s more important than ever for our community to stay connected and informed on these developments – and to ensure that all patients and families affected by the disease have their voices heard.

There are two sessions remaining and space is still available. Registration details are below.

Please note that the webinar on January 31 is for patients and caregivers only and the webinar on February 7 is for Health Care Providers only.

Integration of TICE and Verity BCG
In late December, BCC posted an update on our website regarding the integration of TICE and Verity BCG. Until 2021, TICE BCG was the only strain available in Canada until Verity-BCG was approved by Health Canada. Click here to see our joint statement with the Canadian Urological Association.

Be sure to ask your doctor if Verity-BCG is a viable treatment option for you as inventory is readily available in many provinces for full dosing.

We are committed to providing our bladder cancer community with updates regarding this important treatment. Stay tuned over the coming months for an educational webinar on BCG as well as a patient-focused podcast that will feature a bladder cancer patient sharing their experience with BCG.
Bladder Cancer in Canada: How much do Canadians know?
Recently, Seagen Canada announced the availability of a new treatment option for adults living with locally advanced or metastatic bladder cancer who previously had limited options. This new treatment option is welcome news, expanding the armamentarium [available choices] of current bladder cancer treatments. In addition to currently-approved medicines, other treatment options include surgery and lifestyle modifications such as quitting smoking.[i]

This is an important step for those living with locally advanced or metastatic bladder cancer, which accounts for 10-15% of those diagnosed[ii].

To better understand Canadians’ knowledge of bladder cancer, Seagen Canada in partnership with Leger Research, conducted a survey of over 1,500 Canadians. While Canadians can always learn more about bladder cancer, the results were also encouraging.

Survey highlights include:[iii]
  • The majority of respondents (68%) feel comfortable asking their healthcare provider about their risks of bladder cancer
  • Over 60% of respondents were aware that blood in the urine was a sign of bladder cancer
  • Women were better able to identify the symptoms of bladder cancer compared to men, an interesting discrepancy as men are more likely to be diagnosed with bladder cancer[iv]
  • Almost half (46%) of respondents were able to identify two or more bladder cancer risk factors

When facing a cancer diagnosis, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider about treatment options.

Last chance! Share your bladder cancer experience today
In late 2021, the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition (WBCPC) launched the first-ever global bladder cancer patient experience survey. The survey represents a collaborative effort between the WBCPC and its 11 member organizations from around the world, including Bladder Cancer Canada.

The survey covers the entire bladder cancer patient pathway – from symptoms, screening, diagnosis, treatment and care, through to follow-up and survivorship. The survey is global, and available in 10 languages. Findings will be translated into a report analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in the bladder cancer care pathway from the patient perspective.

The survey is currently available in English (https://bit.ly/bladdercancersurvey) and French (https://bit.ly/wbcpc-fr). Please complete your survey by January 31, 2022 to have your experience as a Canadian included!
Walk volunteers needed
This year, Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer aims to engage more patients, family and friends, raise more funds for research and patient support, and represent more communities across Canada. We need your leadership to help us reach these goals!

Walk Leads organize and execute a walk in their own community, recruit volunteers to help in the planning process, promote the event and ensure everything runs smoothly on event day!

We are looking for volunteers to join us as a Walk Lead and support us in growing this year's walk on September 24 & 25. Together, we can have participants walking in every city across Canada!

With some exciting updates on the horizon for Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer, we are eager to get our Walk Leads started!

Please email Theresa Blondin, our Manager of Volunteers and Community Programming at theresab@bladdercancercanada.org to let us know if you’re able to join us as a volunteer this year, either as a Walk Lead or an event day volunteer; however, you are able to join us we cannot wait to walk with you in 2022!

Thank you for helping us create a world where bladder cancer is just a memory.
Our sincere thanks for your support!
To the many, many people that made a contribution to our 2021 holiday appeal campaign, we want to extend our sincere gratitude for your gift.
