THE COUNCIL CONNECT

March 2025

Dear Maryland's Arts Community,

The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) continues to monitor developments on the federal level that have impacted or have the potential to impact the National Endowment for the Arts and its investments in Maryland, including its partnership program that provides funding to state and regional arts councils. It is MSAC’s mission to provide leadership that champions creative expression, diverse programming, equitable access, lifelong learning, and the arts as a celebrated contributor to the quality of life for all the people of Maryland. MSAC has no plans to move away from this mission and as council members we believe that MSAC’s investments and services play an essential role in ensuring that every person has access to the transformative power of the arts.

Art defines us. It helps us communicate. It helps us heal, learn, and understand perspectives - our own and those of others. Art is what makes a society, a state, a community, and us as individuals strong and resilient. And, arts and cultural production has a $12.8 billion impact on Maryland’s economy. We need the work of artists and arts organizations now more than ever. We will continue to use the principles named in our mission to guide our investments with the resources available to us for the good of the state, Maryland’s diverse arts community, and all the people who call Maryland home.
