From the Pastor

On Thursday mornings, without fail, someone eventually asks me, “Hey — when are you going to write something for the newsletter?”

This week, somewhere between coffee and my inbox filling up, I jokingly said out loud, “Maybe I should just let Mike write the cover this week.”

If you don’t know Mike Klug, you should. He’s our phenomenal facilities director. If something works around here, it’s usually because of him.

So I said, “Mike, why don’t you write something?”

He said, “Well, don’t you try to be biblical?”

I said, “Yes… I try.”

He said, “I don’t know what the Bible has to say about facilities.”

I told him, “Oh, it has plenty to say. Exodus and Leviticus are full of details about building the tabernacle — materials, dimensions, structure. God cares about buildings.”

And then I said, “If you really want to go for it, write about Ananias and Sapphira in Acts. They come before the church leadership with an offer, lie about it… and God strikes them dead. It’s basically one of the first trustees meetings in the church!

At that point someone wisely said, “I think the goal is to get people to serve. I’m not sure that story will help.”

Well — before lunch break was even over, Mike had sent me the devotion below.

It’s thoughtful. It’s honest. And it’s exactly the kind of reflection that reminds me how blessed I am to serve alongside such faithful people.

Take a moment to read it slowly.

What Does It Cost to Be a Disciple?

Acts 4:12 – 5:11

What does God want from us?

What does it cost to be a disciple?

Acts 5 tells the story of a man and his wife who sold their property to raise money to support the early church. However, when they brought the proceeds to Peter for him to distribute to the faithful, they withheld a portion for themselves. Unfortunately for the couple, the consequence for their unfaithfulness was instant death at the feet of Peter. A harsh lesson that seems more at place in the Old Testament.

The story’s message seems both clear and absolutely terrifying — God demands 100% faithfulness. Anything less is unacceptable and leads to death. That’s a pretty high bar to reach, particularly for someone like me who can’t seem to stick to anything 100% of the time. My struggles are real and my failures are legion.

But I ask myself: why, knowing that their money was going to help the church and their fellow believers, did Ananias and Sapphira decide to hold some of their proceeds back? It seems at least likely that their lack of obedience was the result of a lack of faith. What if the church community did not take care of them? What if they gave their money away only to find they needed it back? What if God let them down?

Total and full commitment, in a real and practical sense, seems unattainable without first having total and full faith — faith that we are in God’s loving hand and that He will take care of our needs. Not necessarily our wants and desires, and maybe not in the manner we would have chosen for ourselves — but that He will be there for us.

When we fully trust in God’s love, grace, and providence, how can we respond other than with joy and generosity toward others? Our commitment is a natural outflowing of our faith — a tangible expression and reflection of the love we know we are receiving from our Lord.

Let us, therefore, rededicate ourselves to growing in our faith and trust in God — and let us reflect that faith in our full commitment to supporting the kingdom of God here on earth. Let us bring God 100% of our thoughts, prayers, words, and deeds as a real and living gift to His service.
