Students enrolled in Hopewell Valley Central High School's Advanced Community-Based Creative Design III course recently partnered with PEI Kids to design and create a mural that reflects the agency's mission of supporting children and families.
The Community-Based Creative Design program at HVCHS empowers students to use their creativity and artistic talents to support local nonprofits and organizations through hands-on projects and service-learning experiences. As part of this project-based, service-learning course, students applied advanced artistic techniques, creative problem-solving, and collaboration to plan, design, and execute a meaningful piece of community-centered artwork.

The mural project engaged students in every stage of the creative process, from research and concept development to presentation and installation, while working alongside a real-world community partner. Through this experience, students explored how art can foster connection, communicate important messages, and create a positive impact within the community.
The mural now hangs outside PEI Kids' entrance to welcome clients and visitors. By connecting art with community needs, students discover how creative expression can serve as a powerful tool for collaboration, civic engagement, and positive change.

CHILD ABUSE
PREVENTION MONTH
| Ereaunna Lacava and Annette Henderson working our table at the Hamilton Y. | |
Child Abuse Prevention Month is a
big deal at PEI Kids, and this April, our Prevention team made a great showing to mark the occasion.
We started by "planting" a Pinwheel Garden in front of our building. The blue-and-silver pinwheel is the national symbol for Child Abuse Prevention Month. We invited the community to stop in all month to plant a pinwheel.
Later in month, we collaborated with Hamilton Child Abuse Prevention Task Force to present a Child Safety Matters workshop for their Family Day event as well as a tabling opportunity at the Hamilton Y where we handed out child safety literature and prizes to participants stopping by our table.
The outcome of this month-long effort was great community-building, child safety and prevention education.

MENTAL HEALTH
AWARENESS MONTH
| Audrey Massey, Noah Possible at Capital City High School's Student Mental Health Awareness Fair. | |
May was Mental Health Awareness Month. Even though we foster youth mental health all year long through our prevention and intervention programs, we were excited to be part of this year's Student Mental Health Awareness tour
Over the course of three days, we had the opportunity to speak with 900 students at Capital City High School and Trenton Central High School, sharing information on the effects of trauma, safe dating relationships, as well as information on our programs and services.
Students were eager for our handouts and information and welcomed the opportunity to engage with us on a range of safety topics. You can see some of the informational handouts we created specifically for students at this event:
