SPRING 2018

WE'VE ALWAYS DONE IT THAT WAY IS OVER!"
Government organizations are often encouraged to institutionalize best practices, freeze them into place, focus on execution, stick to their knitting, increase predictability, and get processes under control. However, today governments face a radically shifting context for the workforce, the workplace, and the world of work. To move forward toward better government, leaders must be catalysts for change, recognizing that "doing things differently and doing different things" are prerequisites for creating a climate that can penetrate a risk-averse culture that limits innovative thinking.

WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE WORKSHOPS - STILL TIME TO REGISTER
TIME TO TAKE THE
"ROAD LESS TRAVELED"

What should leaders of government who want to build their 21st-century workforce do? Old models must be discarded in favor of proven approaches to create the Workplace of Tomorrow. The Mejorando Group and the Alliance for Innovation are partnering in bringing the "Workforce of the Future" workshop to several cities around the nation. I am delighted to be delivering this workshop as I focus on providing progressive and practical strategies and tools to help you and your organization attract, retain, and optimize talent all in the name of accelerating organizational performance. On July 25, I will be in Murfreesboro (Nashville area), Tennessee and July 27 in Pearland (Houston area) Texas presenting the workshop so if you're in either of those locations, please register now. If you are interested in hosting a regional workshop in your city or county, please contact me at patrick@gettingbetterallthetime.com.

I recently re-read the timeless book "The Road Less Traveled." I first read Scott Peck's personal journey to increasing self-awareness in the early 1990's. Originally published in 1978, Peck unknots the threads that challenge and confront each of us our entire lives. As I re-read it (with a few more miles on me now than before) there were several areas that continue to resonate with me - that growth and comfort don't co-exist, the significance of parental love as a guidepost to one's entire life, the power of feeling valued, the role of being disciplined, his emphasis on problem solving as mission-critical to shaping our character and love and all its beauty and challenges.

I'VE BEEN WRITING AGAIN...
NEWS YOU CAN USE
Recipe for Success

How do you know when employees are performing exceptionally? In my consulting work for local governments, I have frequently observed a significant disconnect between job descriptions (what people are hired to do); performance appraisal instruments (what people are evaluated against); and daily conversations (what people are advised to do or as I say, "conversations are the oxygen of priorities"). Remember, one of your roles is to serve as a member of the organization's "performance chefs" who is busy in the kitchen creating a recipe for employee performance and organizational effectiveness. Read the entire article to learn about my "Recipe for Success: Seven Factors for High Performance" and characteristics describing each - Attitude, Behavior/Conduct, Knowledge, Passion, Performance, Skills and Values.
