OCTOBER 2023

Aloha,

We are still heartbroken for our Maui neighbors and we are doing our best to support them in every way we can. Due to the fires, the ferry service from Maui has been limited so the number of visitors to our Sanctuary has been down. We went from averaging 100 visitors a day to less than 10. This unfortunately has a negative financial impact on us as we rely heavily on donations from our visitors.

Despite this, our staff and cats are in good spirits and keeping busy with projects that we sometimes aren’t able to get to when we are busy. The tropical climate is rough on our buildings, so we have been renovating and painting weathered cat houses and other structures. We also built a new cat coop, gave the Sanctuary a deep clean, and created social media content for our loyal fans! Did you know we don’t have any hardware stores on our island? That means all of our materials are barged in from our neighbor islands, which is very expensive.

We are hoping visitor traffic will pick up while still being respectful to those who lost so much in the Maui fires. We are still open every day 10am-3pm!

Please consider donating to help us through this difficult time for us.

Mahalo Nui Loa,

38 Cats Take Trip of a Lifetime

We partnered with Greater Good Charities to send 38 Lanai Lions to Oregon Humane Society with the goal of freeing up space for Maui Humane Society to treat and house cats affected by the fires.

Our staff worked tirelessly to make sure our cats were healthy, safe, and comfortable for their Southwest flight to Portland.

While we are sad to see so many of our beloved kitties go, we know they are in great hands and many have already found their furr-ever homes!

Toulouse Finds Love in Oregon

Oregon resident Melissa Fisher visited the Sanctuary mid 2021 and fell in love with little Toulouse. She decided to sponsor him as part of our Adopt in Place program and was able to follow his journey for the next couple of years via email updates.

Toulouse was born at the Sanctuary in March 2018 with a brother and sister. He was smaller and more shy than his siblings and watched as they both got adopted. He thrived in our care and became a social kitty who loved treats and pets from guests.

When Melissa found out Toulouse was part of the group of cats heading to Portland, she rushed to Oregon Humane Society to welcome him into his new furr-ever home! He is acclimating well to life indoors but holding onto his Sanctuary habits by finding places cozy to sleep and eating and playing late at night.
