June 2023
Thanking
Welcome Home Celebration Sponsors, Board and Staff

On June 7, 2023 more than 60 of HUI's current and former Welcome Home Celebration sponsors gathered at Founding Farmers in Potomac, MD to enjoy great food and drink in person together for the first time since 2019! The gathering was long overdue and was a welcoming break from zoom fatigue.

During the gathering, we recognized for a second time (the first time was over zoom at the Virtual Welcome Home Celebration) the dedication of HUI's 2023 Lifetime Achievement Honorees Colonel and Jonnie Mae Armstrong. Over a 26 year period, the Armstrongs have led the furnishing of 85 of Housing Unlimited's homes! They go to extraordinary lengths to ensure people in mental health recovery are treated with dignity and have permanent and quality housing. The Armstrongs serve as an example for others to follow.

Abe Schuchman also thanked our hard-working staff and board members for their many contributions and invited guests to say a few words, which many chose to do.

We had a wonderful time getting to visit with one another for several hours at Founding Farmers. Seeing old and dear friends, and being able to thank them in person, was a highlight of our year!

Meet Housing Unlimited Board Member
Sunita Benson-Agwu

Sunita Benson-Agwu is one of Housing Unlimited's star Board members. Originally from Nigeria, Sunita came to the U.S. in 2007 to study engineering. She received her B.S. from Morgan State University where she was also one of the founding members of the Civil Engineering Honor Society. She later earned two master's degrees in Project Management and Civil Engineering-Structures from the University of Maryland. She started working for Pepco as an intern and now is the Manager for Smart Grid Project Execution, which focuses on the oversight and execution of emerging technologies in the Pepco region.

Navigating change and demonstrating adaptability are some of Sunita's most evident life skills. She had to adapt to a new country and all that entails, she has a deep sense of meaning and she believes that having a community is essential to individual growth.

Sunita was recommended to the board by Tat-Lin Angus, a previous Housing Unlimited Board member. Sunita researched the organization, spoke with Housing Unlimited's CEO Abe Schuchman, then visited one of the homes to engage with some of the tenants.

Sunita has been on the board since October 2021 and enjoys being a part of the mission, explaining that "I firmly believe that reliable housing is a critical step in gaining independence and integrating into the community."

Thank you, Sunita, for all you have done and continue to do for Housing Unlimited!
