Take action - wear red tomorrow!

A note from lead bargainer Davina Diaz

Hello SEA, and welcome to your bargaining updates for 2026.

As your SEA Vice President and lead bargainer I am excited to bring power, action, intention, and transparency to this bargain.

Bargaining is more than just exchanging contract proposals with the district – it’s the culmination of our work to build a stronger union and advocate for what students and staff need. Our ability to win what we propose is determined by our unity and action by every member in every building. And that takes each and every one of us.

SEA has asked our UniServ Directors – the staff that support our union in the field – to focus their time on bargaining. That means that building leaders will need to take a more active role in supporting members in our buildings, which also means that the membership will be growing our skills and ownership of our union.

Let’s start strong. Do your part by:

1.     Wearing red tomorrow (Friday)

2.     Texting three coworkers to ask them to wear red tomorrow.

3.     Take photos of yourselves (with others) in red, and email to sea@washingtonea.org

4.     Asking your coworkers if they got this update.

Already, your bargaining team has collected surveys, put together priorities, and is beginning to craft proposals. Your action is our strength. Let’s do this together, SEA!

In unity,

Davina

What to expect in bargaining

Your bargaining team, officers, board members, and staff are committed to winning the best contract possible, and that takes every member being informed and engaged. We’re committed to:

  • Keep members informed transparently of the bargaining process, agreements we reach on proposals, research/information we have that informs the bargain, and more
  • Work with ARs and the Member Communication Action Team (MCAT) to coordinate actions and mobilization to bring more power to bear at the table
  • Represent the priorities of SEA members as reflected in bargaining surveys, prioritizing widely and deeply felt issues
  • Preserve the integrity of the bargaining process by not “bargaining in public.” We need the space to explore issues and potential solutions with flexibility and trust. When the conversations are a work in progress, criticism of ideas that aren’t yet fully formed can damage our ability to get the best resolution possible or even shut dialogue down.

Member solidarity and mobilization will strengthen our ability to win at the bargaining table. Members should:

  • Know who your ARs and/or Member Communication Action Team members are and ensure they have your home email and cell phone number
  • Read your texts and emails to ensure you stay up-to-date
  • Follow SEA on social media (Instagram and Facebook)
  • Participate in actions when asked by ARs or MCAT members

Together we have the power to win what our students and colleagues need. Let’s unite, take action, and win!

Our bargaining priorities

The SEA Bargaining Team reviewed member surveys and narrowed priorities to six general areas:

  • Rebalancing our work to allow more time with students
  • Pay
  • Campus safety and security
  • Leave time and leave processes
  • Substitute rights and coverage
  • Hiring & staffing
