Weathering the Storm: Minority Stress and LGBTQ+ Lives in a Changing Climate

Join us for a Lunch & Learn in recognition of Pride month. The presentation will include a short didactic presentation followed by a panel presentation, Q+A’s and close with ideas and strategies for participant ally actions.





It is anticipated after participating attendees will be able to: 




  • Describe the Minority Stress Model and its connection to the current cultural climate, including how systemic stressors mayaffect the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ clients. 


  • Recognize the diverse lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals as shared by panel members, building empathy and awareness of the real-world challenges this community faces. 


  • Identify at least three concrete strategies for affirming allyship and advocacy that social workers can apply in their practice when supporting LGBTQ+ clients.

Robin P. McHaelen, MSW (She) Is the founder and previous Executive Director of True Colors, Inc., an organization that provided education, advocacy, and support programming to ensure that LGBTQ+ youth of all backgrounds are safe, valued, and able to be their authentic selves.   

In addition to offering on site and on-line LGBTQ+ programming, Robin is an adjunct professor at Central Connecticut State University, teaching intergroup communications; human sexuality and LGBTQ+ Social Work; an Expert Trainer with the Human Rights Campaign All Children, All Families Program, as well as a DEI trainer for Diversity Builder, Inc.

Came out as Non-binary as a 40th birthday gift to myself 7 years ago and founded Danbury Pride 5 years ago. Kris Robles, LCSW (he/him) In addition to his work at DCF, Kris is the incoming president at NASW CT. He describes his private practice in this way: After several years of providing social work services to a diverse population in Connecticut, my focus is currently combined on teaching, training and assisting others in helping them strive to their True Self. I have appreciated every opportunity that graces my present to lead and be challenged to learn new things. I am excited to be able to share my expertise and knowledge with others who want to learn and grow in this exciting field. Myles Tripp (He/Him):  Myles Tripp is a native of New Haven, Connecticut, who’s been singing professionally for over 15 years. He has traveled throughout the country singing R&B, Jazz, Pop, and gospel. Since the release of his last project, Myles has gotten back to touring and has since released his newest single and music video, Groove. Throughout his career, Myles has been privileged to share the stage with Walt Disney World Entertainment, Tweet, Tamar Braxton, The Clark Sisters, Michelle Buteau, Kurt Karr, and many others. Tripp lives by the age-old adage of “practice what you preach”—not only as an artist, but also as an ordained minister. Growing up in Pentecostal and non-denominational churches, Tripp draws from his experience of leading devotional services and performing in front of thousands of congregants. He also toured at a young age in churches along the East Coast, working with world-class guitarists, bass players, and other musicians. Nicole Mayweather-Banks, LCSW (She/Her) I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Connecticut, owner of Changing FACES Counseling & Wellness LLC, and founder of Go Bananas, a small, Black, female, and queer-owned dessert business specializing in homemade banana pudding. In both of my businesses, my passion is creating spaces where people feel welcomed, valued, and connected. Through my therapy practice, I provide gender-affirming care and support individuals in building resilience, overcoming challenges, and living authentically. Through Go Bananas, I bring people together through a comforting, nostalgic dessert experience made with real bananas, quality ingredients, and lots of love. Whether in the therapy room or serving banana pudding at community events, my goal is the same: to foster joy, connection, and a sense of belonging while making a positive impact in the lives of others.  


Mary Roche (She/Her): Mary retired after 30 years of working in IT Project Management for Eversource. Since then, she has been volunteering with several organizations. Mary is the President of the Board of Directors for the Hartford Artisan Weaving Center She also volunteers with the South Central Agency on Aging working with folks in their Money Management program. Her other hobbies include singing with Another Octave, golfing with her wife, and crocheting. 


Barbara Curry is an award-winning broadcast television producer/director. During the pandemic, they joined a broadcast network. Today they work in a culture where everyone is encouraged to be their most authentic self, while the company itself has literally erased all LGBTQ+ acknowledgement.
