Photofeature: Egg Stuffing Volunteers Make Easter Egg Hunt Possible for Local Kids
Susanville’s annual Community Easter Egg hunt will be held next Saturday, April 19th, at the Lassen County Fairgrounds with lots of candy-filled eggs thanks to some wonderful volunteers who spent Wednesday afternoon at the fairgrounds stuffing the plastic eggs.
Around 70 volunteers came to help stuff the 12,000 eggs that will be strewn about the fairgrounds’ lawn on the morning of the hunt.
Thanks to our volunteers from Lassen County 4-H, Susanville Future Farmers of America, LHS Drill Team, Junior Fair Board, Eskaton Lassen Manor, FBLA, Lassen High ASB, the Lassen County Fair staff, Calliope Rose, Lassen County royalty Julienne Bennett and Lily Ammon and several really nice families and individuals who showed up.
Thank you to everybody for your help!

Fire Safe Council $3M Fuels Treatment
Project Gets Underway Northwest of Town
Last year the Lassen Fire Safe Council was awarded a Cal-FIRE Wildfire Prevention grant in the amount of $2,999,924.32 for its North Susanville WUI Fuels Treatment Project. The purpose of the wildfire prevention project is to reduce hazardous wildfire fuels across the landscape, establish and maintain fuelbreaks along strategic wildfire containment features, and remove dead and dying hazard trees adjacent to public and private infrastructure.
The project spans from Eagle Lake Road to the Upper Susanville Ranch Park off Paiute Lane. Work has commenced on the construction of the Eagle Lake Road Fuel Break and Paiute Lane portions of the project.
LFSC has partnered with local contractor Tubit Enterprises to complete biomass utilization treatments within Upper Susanville Ranch Park and neighboring private properties.
Biomass utilization is the mechanical thinning and removal of small sub-merchantable conifers (less than 10 inches in diameter) in overstocked eastside pine forests.
According to the Fire Safe Council, thinning small diameter trees to favor larger more fire resilient trees will reduce ladder fuels and improve forest health within the park.
Work within the Upper Susanville Ranch Park is scheduled to begin in next few days and last through mid-May.
Use Caution in Upper Ranch Park
Upper Ranch Park trail users are advised to use caution as heavy equipment including feller bunchers and rubber-tired skidders will be operating in the area and chip trucks will be hauling the chipped biomass material to Honey Lake Power.
Operations will be active from the early morning to midafternoon, Monday through Friday. LFSC and Lassen County are making efforts to minimize impacts on Upper Ranch Park use while conducting the critical fuels reduction work.
Project partners include Lassen County, City of Susanville, Honey Lake Valley RCD, Sierra Pacific Industries, WM Beaty and Associates, Collins Company, Petesburg Fire Protection Zone, and dozens of private landowners.

Susanville Rabbit Drive
April 11, 1894
Yesterday the first rabbit drive took place. About 500 men, ladies, boys and Indians were on hand for the drive.
A pair of wings one mile each in length were stretched and the drive began. A strip of ground two miles wide and three in length was drove over and nearly 2,000 of the pests corralled, and meet the fate of all transgressors on Leavitt’s ranch.
There would have been more killed, but the lack of proper management of the ground greatly helped the poor jacks to escape. It was estimated that one half of the rabbits escaped.
There will be regular drives each week for some time to come.
Farmers are seeding and the outlook so far is all that they want for good crops – plenty of snow on the hills for irrigating for the season.
